Football coach Deion Sanders has reportedly been struggling with an inexplicable illness. On July 25, USA Today published a piece noting Sanders’ return to the University of Colorado-Boulder, where he is a coach. He was away from the campus due to an unannounced health issue.

He reportedly spent his absence on his Texas ranch, where he was surrounded by family and Eric Smoot, a chef. On July 28, Deion Sanders, alongside his medical team, is expected to hold a press conference where he will share an update on his health issues.

The footballer has battled several health issues in the past. USA Today notes that he struggled with blood circulation problems, following which he had to get an emergency operation done, during which both his toes had to be surgically removed in 2021. Moreover, he reportedly had a little less than a dozen surgeries on his left leg.

Sanders had to treat an inflamed nerve with surgery. He also dislocated a toe previously. He had blood clots below his knee, with a major one on his thigh being removed in 2023. Reportedly, this problem runs in the family, and his uncle lost his life to the condition.

Deion Sanders shared a post on Instagram from May 9, updating about the press conference. In the video, he said:

“I don’t know if I am ready mentally, emotionally. Last night was tough. Yesterday was tough. I had to make a will.”

What did Eric Smoot say about working with Deion Sanders?

According to Fox News, this will be his third season of working as the head coach. Due to his health issues, he wasn’t thoroughly involved with his football team. On July 25, Deion Sanders shared a post on his X, writing:

“Back and Feeling Great!”

Meanwhile, a few days ago, Eric Smoot shared an Instagram post in which he was seen posing with Sanders. The post was captioned:

“An absolute honor to cook for the legendary @deionsanders over the past few weeks. Grateful for the chance to serve excellence right in his kitchen. Big thanks to @jayyo26 for the opportunity, and to my amazing clients @saramadsenmiller and @kmdendy for thinking of me. Only God could’ve set this up—divine favor, seasoned just right.”

Sanders reacted to the post, commenting:

“You Blessed the home my brother. Your spirit, your meals, your preparation & your tidiness was! God bless u man.”

On July 10, Deion Sanders sat down with the hosts of ESPN, where he spoke about his Colorado team. He explained that there was a big difference between having great individual players and having a strong team.

He believed their new team was better overall, even though it would take more than one player to match the skills of someone like Travis Hunter or Shedeur Sanders.

Deion Sanders said the team had improved on both offense and defense, and the coaches and players now better understood the game strategies because it was their second year working with them. Everyone on the team knew there was a high standard to follow, and they were all working to meet it.
