A viral video of Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour from early May 2025 was widely circulated on social media, alleging that she had revealed why the US President Donald Trump was banned from the Met Gala.

The video, which spread on platforms like X, Instagram, and TikTok, featured Wintour appearing to give a monologue and attacking Trump, saying he "was not really welcome" to the Met Gala.

In the video, Wintour also said that she had banned the US President to prevent the Met Gala from being made into a “political show,” and stated that she didn’t want his supporters chanting “Make fashion great again” near the red carpet.

"It's not to reserve a seat for him, nor to let his supporters shout 'Make fashion great again' by the red carpet. We make room for art, culture and the true spirit of innovation, rather than making way for someone who is blatantly belittled women, mocked immigrants and regarded aesthetics as a bargaining chip. She added in the video.

The clip, which has been viewed at least more than a million times on some platforms, was deduced to be a deep fake AI-generated video.

According to a report by Snopes, a close inspection showed that the video was taken from a 2019 episode of Vogue’s Go Ask Anna in which Anna Wintour spoke briefly about what to wear to an interview and answered other fashion questions, which was completely unrelated to the President or the Met Gala.

Experts have supposedly called out the voice in the video as AI-generated, giving it a 2 out of 100 for authenticity using the Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector tool. The synthetic voice exhibited small signs of synthesis, such as clumsy pacing and intonation, characteristic of deep fake videos.

Vogue has officially fact-checked the video. Snopes reported that a magazine spokesman confirmed in an email that the footage was “definitely fake” and that Wintour never uttered any of the comments attributed to her in the viral clip.

According to reports, it was originally posted to TikTok by user @kiu1384934c, an account that shares AI-generated clips of celebrities. The original has since been deleted, though copies are circulating.

Donald Trump was a prominent Met Gala attendee before his presidency. He has even attended the show with Ivana Trump, Andrea Murray, and Melania Knauss.

His association with the event was special in 2004 when he proposed to Melanie Knauss at that year’s gala, which was called “Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the 18th Century.

But Trump’s time at the Met Gala came to an end after he became a politician. In an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, which aired in 2017, Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour was quizzed on who she would never invite back to the Met Gala, to which she immediately responded, saying, ”Donald Trump.
