Sydney Sweeney finally graced the 2025 Met Gala, turning heads in her black sequined gown that hugged her curves with a keyhole cut on her chest. However, just before she made her way into the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the internet was already telling her to turn back.

Before entering the venue, Sweeney was spotted leaving her hotel, with paparazzi swarming to get a good look at the Euphoria star’s outfit — only to disappoint some.

On X (formerly Twitter), internet users claimed that Sweeney’s outfit deviated from the event’s Tailored for You dress code, which celebrates the legacy of Black dandyism.

“get back to the hotel and CHANGE,” @obvioyuh replied under a clip of the actress leaving the hotel.
“someone didn’t read the email,” @koralinadean joked.
“I question her PR bc not dressing on theme when you were entangled in controversy about supporting #him is a choice,” @trentrash said.
“beautiful gown but how did she hear the theme and think of wearing that….” @fionabanksss wrote.
“every year someone has to be brave and take the first L for not fitting the theme, and this year its her,” @lqvekanthony declared.
“Do people not look at the theme at all orrrr,” @KenRosa05 queried.
“Beautiful dress and makeup but not really on theme so its a no for me dawg,” @ultrashaila commented.
“she looks great but unfortunately it’s a chop for me because she’s not following the theme,” @quaketano added.

Nevertheless, fans still showered praise on Sweeney’s face card.

“the gay in the background saying ‘don’t forget to serve face when you’re walking,’” @frankoceansdye said.
“face card exploded my phone,” @exsdys commented.
“Sydney Sweeney makes a fashionable entrance at the #MetGala,” @Web3Hashira wrote.
“stunning is her second name,” @alfiyastic added.
“‘don't forget to serve face’ when she was already serving...?” @faketonicchilds remarked.

2025 Met Gala pays homage to Black dandyism

Held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5, the 2025 Met Gala’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, is a nod to the legacy of Black dandyism, a cultural movement that spurted in the 19th century, where Black individuals used fashion to express cultural pride and self-identity.

The theme was also inspired by the book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, by Monica L. Miller, released in 2009.

In a statement, Miller said:

“Dandyism can seem frivolous, but it often poses a challenge to or a transcendence of social and cultural hierarchies.”

She added:

“It asks questions about identity, representation, and mobility in relation to race, class, gender, sexuality, and power. This exhibition explores dandyism as both a pronouncement and a provocation.”

For this year’s big night, the official dress code, Tailored For You, urged attendees to showcase their own interpretation of the theme through personalized style and encouraged individual expression with classic menswear.
