Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, longtime Cubs second baseman, dies at 65 following cancer battle

American former professional baseball player Ryne Sandberg died on July 28 at the age of 65. The news was announced on his social media account with the statement:

"To Ryne’s Fans, Friends, and Baseball Family - It is with heavy hearts, we announce that Ryne passed away tonight in the comfort of his home. Ryne was surrounded by his loving wife Margaret, their children, and grandchildren. We thank you for all of the kind words, support, and love during this difficult time. Ryne will forever be in our hearts. - Ryne’s Family"

Sandberg was dealing with prostate cancer that he first announced to his fans in January 2024 through a social media post where he wrote:

"Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer. I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends."

Ryne Sandberg updates fans on his health before his death

The news has come as a shock to the sports world, who are sending their condolences and prayers for the late sports player. Days before his death, Ryne Sandberg uploaded an Instagram post, giving a health update to his fans through the statement:

"It’s been a challenging few months as I have been going through treatment on a regular basis. While I am continuing to fight, I’m looking forward to making the most of every day with my loving family and friends."

Following his passing, Tom Ricketts, chairman of the Chicago Cubs, said in a statement reported by ESPN:

"Ryne Sandberg was a hero to a generation of Chicago Cubs fans and will be remembered as one of the all-time greats in nearly 150 years of this historic franchise."

Famous by his nickname Ryno, Sandberg played as a second baseman for the Chicago Cubs for all 15 seasons of his career, joining in 1982. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, was chosen for the All-Star game 10 times, and was named the MVP in the National League in 1984. Additionally, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.


As a tribute to Sandberg, the Cubs will wear a custom jersey patch for the remainder of the season.
