Pastor Jamal Bryant and RHOP alum Gizelle Bryant were married for seven years from 2002 to 2009. In a recent episode of Kandi Burruss’s SPEAK ON IT podcast, Jamal said he had a child outside of marriage, which became one of the reasons for his divorce.

Speaking about his early days, he said:

“I went through a divorce, had a child outside of my marriage and wrecked my family, my ministry, my name, my brand.”

He added:

“Church people looked beyond my character flaws and extracted my gift and my character couldn't keep up.”

Kandi asked Jamal Bryant how he managed to do everything while keeping his sanity intact. He said her statement had two assumptions: Sanity and management. He explained that poverty is not essentially about money but rather the mismanagement of time.

Jamal noted that one must be careful about the different types of narcissism. According to him:

“Narcissism is a fancy word for selfish, of that all I see is me. All I care about is me. All I'm concerned about me. So, I wasn't thinking on how this affect my daughter, how would this affect my marriage, how this affect my ministry. It was just what will this do for me.”

Bryant shared something he had once learned. He said that money gave people more chances to be themselves. He also said that those who thought money didn’t change things probably never had any.

Jamal Bryant on getting addicted to praying

Kandi asked Jamal Bryant what he went through when he found out that his child’s mother was pregnant. He said people don’t deal with the impulsive thoughts of taking away one's life. Shocked, Kandi asked if he thought he would take that action, to which he replied:

“Oh, yeah, because I didn't know life as an alternative. And one of the greatest barriers that people have to contend with is the tattoo of shame. So, there are things, Kandi, that you can go through or I can go through in privacy. There's a whole another arena in public space.”

Kandi asked what stopped Jamal Bryant from taking his life, and his answer was prayer. He explained that prayer had been important in his life. At some points, he relied on it as much as breathing, while at other times it helped him escape tough situations.

Jamal said people should not confuse mistakes with identity. What someone did was not the same as who they were, though it was easier to understand this after healing than while still in pain. During his hardest moments, he wasn’t even sure if he would recover and feel okay again.

In 2020, Gizelle Bryant shared her thoughts about Jamal Bryant while speaking to The Daily Dish. She said:

“So, Jamal and I have been in the trenches of trying to do civil rights and trying to make sure that we leave this world a better place.”

Gizelle said she always felt proud of Jamal, especially for the work he did in the Black community, where he put in his full effort and care to help others.
