Spanish singer Rosalia Vila Tobella spoke candidly about her sexuality. Her views came a year after actress Hunter Schafer revealed last year that in 2019, she was in a relationship with the singer for five months.

In an exclusive interview with Elle published on August 14, the singer was asked if her relationship forced her to be open about her sexuality. She said

“No, I do not pressure myself. I think of freedom. That’s what guides me.”

In April 2024, Schafer revealed the relationship in an interview with GQ Magazine. However, even if they were no longer together, they remained friends, something that Schafer was proud of. She said her bond with the singer is more familiar. Schafer also said:

“I have really beautiful friendships with people that I was once romantically involved with.”

Discussing the relationship with Rosalia, the Euphoria actress said:

“It’s been so much speculation for so long. Part of us just wants to get it over with, and then another part is like, ‘It’s none of anybody’s f*cking business!’ It’s something I’m happy to share. And I think she feels that way too.”

Rosalia landed a role in the third season of Euphoria, about which she couldn’t spill much during the Elle interview, as the production for the same is underway. However, she said she had a pleasant experience meeting Hunter Schafer on the set, while also interacting with other stars like Alexa Demie and Zendaya. The singer said:

“I have good friends there. It feels really nice to be able to find each other.”

What did Sam Levinson and Penélope Cruz say about Rosalia?

Sam Levinson, the series creator, appreciated Rosalia’s work in Euphoria. He told the outlet that he enjoyed watching her act in the show. Levinson explained that he let her experiment with words and emotions in both English and Spanish without giving her strict directions at first, because her natural style was so interesting, charming, and funny.

He added that every time they filmed a scene, he found himself smiling behind the camera. Similarly, actress Penélope Cruz also reflected on working with the singer in the 2019 drama Pain and Glory. She said:

“I was terrified to have to sing with her. She was nervous about acting, and I was nervous about singing, and it was funny to be sharing that nervousness.”

Cruz said she had always been amazed by Rosalia’s voice and her talent as a composer, writer, and performer, adding that the way the Spanish singer expressed herself on stage was special.

Rosalia explained that people sometimes thought she had left music, but that was impossible because music was something a true musician could never walk away from. She also shared that it sometimes took time to understand or reflect on what she had created, and that this was a gift in an artistic career.

She believed today’s fast pace did not match the rhythm of the soul, and to create honestly, she needed to follow the rhythm that felt right for her.
