Home Alone, the iconic film that captured the hearts of every child growing up in the 1990s, and one that continues to do so even today, recently celebrated its 35th anniversary. According to People Magazine, the film, which was released on November 16, 1990, has gone on to establish itself as the ultimate Christmas movie in the decades since its release, but it has also seen the deaths of several actors from the much-loved first film. According to Lad Bible, a total of seventeen actors from the Home Alone franchise have passed away, with seven of them having starred in the first film.

The first "Home Alone" movie, directed by Chris Columbus, follows Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy left alone in his house after his extended family accidentally leaves him behind in their shared home while they leave for a vacation to Paris during the holiday season. The film, which was nominated for two Academy Awards, follows Kevin as he successfully defends his home from two intruders, played by actors Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.

More about the former Home Alone actors who have passed away, as the fan-favorite film celebrates its 35th theatrical release anniversary

The first Home Alone movie's immense popularity launched the then-ten-year-old Macaulay Culkin into overnight stardom. According to People Magazine, the beloved actor has since reprised his popular role as the adult version of the character in various advertisements over the past years, most recently being the "Home but Not Alone" advertisement released by Home Instead, a home-care service brand.

According to Distractify, several notable actors have been part of the Home Alone movie franchise, most notably the first film, which included the likes of Catherine O'Hara, John Heard, Kieran Culkin, John Candy, and comedian Billie Bird, many of whom have since passed away.

John Heard played the role of Peter McCallister, Kevin's father, in both the first and second films, titled "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York." According to the Lad Bible, Heard, who was born on March 7, 1946, passed away on July 21, 2017, from cardiac arrest at the age of seventy-one. In 1991, the Home Alone actor received an Emmy nomination for his role as Viz Makazian, a corrupt New York Police officer in the HBO drama The Sopranos.

John Candy played the role of Gus Polinski, a Polka musician traveling with his band, who meets Kate McCallister, played by Katherine O'Hara, as she attempts to return home to her young son. According to Distractify, the beloved Home Alone actor passed away in 1994 at the age of forty-three from a heart attack. Recently, following the release of the John Candy: I Like Me documentary, Macaulay Culkin recalled how the beloved comedian warned him early on about his father's problematic behavior. Speaking on the subject, Culkin said:

"I think he always had that really great instinct. I think he saw. Listen, even before the wave crested and the Home Alone stuff was happening, it was not hard to see how difficult my father was. It was no secret. He was already a monster."

Another actor who has passed away is comedian Billie Bird, who played the role of Irene, the woman who reluctantly agrees to sell her ticket to Kate McCallister at the airport. She was best known for her role in the 1980s NBC drama Dear John, where she played the character of Bonnie Philbert. According to The Los Angeles Times, Bird passed away in November 2002, at the age of ninety-four, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the years prior. Actor Bill Erwin, who played her husband, Ed, has also passed away.
