George Clooney recently shared his parenting choices during an exclusive interview with Esquire, published on October 6. The two-time Oscar winner shares two kids, 8-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, with his wife and human rights activist Amal Clooney.
During the interview, he said that he grew up on a farm, but when he was a child, he used to hate it. However, he feels this is a good arrangement for his children as they can be away from their gadgets and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. He said:
“You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like—they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
George Clooney went on:
“I was worried about raising our kids in L. A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France, they kind of don’t give a sh*t about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
The piece mentioned that the farm has a tractor on which George Clooney takes his children for a ride. There was also a time when the three of them painted the fencing of the farm themselves, as there was no person to get the job done.
George Clooney on turning 64 and a recent pool incident
While discussing his play Good Night and Good Luck, George Clooney said that he was quite nervous, which was unusual for him. He explained that as he got older, his memory wasn’t as sharp, no matter how healthy he tried to be.
He had long speeches to remember for his play and was scared of forgetting his lines, so before every show, he practiced the entire play alone in his dressing room because he was so nervous. Speaking about his age, George Clooney said:
“But actually there’s something fun about being sixty-four years old and not being sure you’re going to get it right and risking real humiliation.”
Clooney recalled a recent moment involving the pool cover at his residence. He told the interviewer that the pool cover at his house got stuck halfway when he tried to open it. The kids wanted to swim, but he couldn’t let them because it wasn’t safe. Everyone was upset, and the repair person couldn’t come until the next day. So, he decided to fix it himself.
George Clooney removed a heavy cement block, climbed down, took apart a part that looked like a machine, and found a broken piece of plastic inside. After pulling it out and putting everything back together, he pressed the button, and it worked. After fixing it, he showed the broken piece to his children, who responded with excitement. He held up the broken piece like a trophy.
