Tony Dokoupil says meeting his wife, Katy Tur, fundamentally changed his outlook on love.

In his recent chat with People, the CBS Evening News anchor recalls a chance hallway encounter at MSNBC in 2016 that instantly shifted his view on relationships and made him believe in the phenomenon called "love at first sight."

"She came around the corner of this long hallway at 30 Rock, and our eyes locked. It was totally unexpected. I just lit up, and she lit up, and we were in a music video, and from that moment on, I was like, 'This is electric.' Something is special here."

The news anchor added that, before the hallway moment, they technically first rubbed shoulders when he was on air.

"I made an appearance [on Al Sharpton's show] as an environmental writer for the website, and Katie saw it in the makeup room. Lucky for me, the sound was off, so she couldn't tell I was terrible at TV. She just saw my image and she thought, 'Oh, I'm interested in that guy.'"

Afterward, they were introduced to each other, although he admitted to People how "oblivious" he was, adding that he was:

"...in my own head about how bad I was at TV that it didn't occur to me until that night that maybe she introduced herself to me because something was sparking."

Tony Dokoupil on his marriage to Katy Tur: "She's made me the luckiest man"

But while it was Katy Tur who asked him out first as "she was tired of waiting," Tony Dokoupil now confessed how lucky he was to be with the journalist-author.

"Our thinking was if you take a small fraction of the cost of the average American wedding and you just pour it into a weekend getaway for two people, you could have a lot of fun. She's made me the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I wish it for everybody, I really do."

Tony Dokoupil and Katy Tur eloped and tied the knot in October 2017, and share two children: a son born in April 2019 and a daughter born in May 2021.

Tony Dokoupil has two kids, whom he shares with his first wife, Danielle Haas. The latter filed for divorce in 2015.

Meanwhile, after he was named as the new CBS Evening News anchor in December 2025, Katy Tur celebrated his milestone with a heartfelt reflection in an episode of MS NOW.

"10 years ago, I met a guy who lived in a studio apartment filled with cockroaches, and I fell in love with him. Bought the stock low back then."

The broadcast journalist continued:

"Today, his stock hit a new high. I am so, so proud of my husband. I think there's nobody better for this job."
