Record executive Scooter Braun discussed his rift with Taylor Swift on the June 9, 2025, episode of The Diary Of A CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. The interview came days after Swift regained the Masters of her albums.
Scooter Braun thought buying Big Machine would lead to working with all its artists, including Taylor Swift. Although he knew she didn’t get along with Kanye West and Justin Bieber, whom he managed, he still hoped they would talk and collaborate.
However, after the deal was announced, Taylor publicly criticized it, shocking him. When Bartlett asked Braun about what he went through then, he said:
“I couldn't fix the relationship that I didn't have but then I was able to figure out ‘Okay you know what, we will sell it. You know, in a world of streaming, re-records will only help the old catalog as much as they help the new catalog.’”
He went on:
“Both will get a bump. I presented that. I showed you know how everyone can be a winner here and I was able to sell the catalog.”
Scooter Braun reflected on how earlier challenges in his life were signs from the universe that he ignored. He felt like he managed to get through those times without making real changes. But when his marriage ended and he had to spend less time with his children, it hit him hard.
That experience, unlike anything before, shook him and made him realize he needed to wake up and reflect on his life.
Scooter Braun on navigating his divorce and the changes that came later
Scooter Braun shared that he went through a dark moment, during which he felt overwhelmed by the thought of his marriage ending and not being with his kids all the time. He felt like he was losing control and could no longer maintain the perfect image he had built.
For a brief time, he questioned whether he even wanted to keep going. However, he reminded himself that those thoughts didn’t reflect who he was; he would never want to leave his children or anyone else behind. He said:
"I ended up going through a divorce. I ended up going through all this different stuff, but I never was depressed again. And the most interesting thing that happened on the other side of it is six years ago: I was biggest manager and the perfect marriage and you know everything I touch turned to gold and there was no negative press about me ever."
Scooter Braun went on:
"Six years later, I'm divorced. I don't manage anymore. I've had negative press and I couldn't be happier. It doesn't mean it doesn't eb and flow but I get to be the dad I've always wanted to be and the friend I've always wanted to be."
Scooter Braun explained that it took facing serious struggles, painful experiences, and moments when he felt completely broken for him to finally start reflecting on himself and understanding who he was.
Before that, he believed he had to be perfect or act a certain way to be accepted. But once he hit rock bottom, he realized that the people around him, his real friends, had always supported him, and the negative thoughts he had about being alone or judged were just in his head.
