Hernandez Govan, a suspect in rapper Young Dolph’s 2021 murder, has been found not guilty during the court trial. Speaking to the press outside the court on August 21, Govan said he was happy to get his life back.
When asked about what he would like to do first, he said he would hug his son. In a statement to WREG News Channel on August 21, Hernandez Govan thanked his legal team, saying he did not have the resources to cover everything. He thanked the jurors for doing what was right in the case. A reporter asked what his reaction was when he heard that he was free to go. Govan responded:
“It’s hard to explain the feeling of knowing you got your life back and it’s a wonderful feeling I ever experienced and I’m just happy to be free.”
He stated that he had a chance to win the case from the beginning, as he knew he was innocent. However, while the trial was underway, there were moments of frustration, but despite that, he knew his innocence would come to light. When inquired about how much weight was lifted off his shoulders after being found not guilty, by a reporter, Hernandez Govan said:
“It’s a huge weight. I was fighting more so for my son. I have a autistic son. So that's what my fight was mainly for.”
He also added that without the blessings of God, he wouldn’t have made it so far. Govan said he was nervous in the morning, but his attorney made him feel positive and confident.
Hernandez Govan says he would like to move out of Memphis
Outside the court, a reporter mentioned that Govan hadn’t smiled all week and asked to share his feelings about the verdict. He said:
“It's kind of hard to explain the feeling of getting your life back, you know, just from 12 people, you know. So, I'm just blessed and I'm just ready to go see my son.”
The reporter also asked him about his thoughts while waiting for the verdict, to which Hernandez Govan responded by stating that although he felt nervous, he was also surrounded and supported by a confident team. Without them, he said he wouldn’t have managed.
Another reporter asked what advice he would give after hearing his lawyer say that being poor and Black in Memphis led to unfair treatment. Govan said his advice was to leave Memphis. He also said he planned to leave the place. A correspondent wanted to know how it felt when a 4-year-long journey came to an end. Hernandez Govan said:
“Feels great. Just feel like I've been born again. I get a chance to restart my life and and do some positive things.”
When a reporter asked Manny Arora, Hernandez Govan’s lawyer, if the verdict would change anything in Memphis’ court system, he stated that he wasn’t there for Memphis specifically, but if this case showcases how things usually work, then it is something to worry about.
He explained that people should look into and interrogate why so many people end up in jail, often kept without bail, forced into deals, and also question why investigations are not always done properly. He added that his office had the resources to support people in such situations.
