Miley Cyrus shared details about her health struggles. On May 21, 2025, the 32-year-old singer sat down on the Apple Music podcast with Zane Lowe, discussing her new album, Something Beautiful. As the conversation unfolded, she revealed a traumatic experience while doing a show.
Cyrus went through an ovarian cyst condition in 2023 when she was hosting a New Year’s party. Speaking to Lowe, she said:
“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne on New Year’s when I doing my New Year’s show. It was Dolly and Lorne who were like here's no getting out of doing a show with those two, you know.”
Miley Cyrus went on:
“I had a medical emergency I had a ovarian cyst rupture which we didn't know exactly what was going on so we did it but it was pretty traumatic cause it was like extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway but you know it was really really hard on me.”
Miley Cyrus shared that during a dinner with Lorne, he told her something that stayed with her. He said everyone gets six months to feel sorry for themselves, and after that, it’s time to start moving forward.
By the time Christmas and New Year’s came around, her time to be in that low place had run out. He also mentioned that many artists had sat in that same chair and said they were done with music, implying that going through tough moments was common in the industry.
Miley Cyrus on her sobriety and the unique condition in her vocal cords
When Zane Lowe asked Miley Cyrus where she was in life at that point, she explained that she liked to focus on herself from the inside out. She mentioned how physically demanding her performances were, comparing them to athletic activity, and said the stress involved wasn’t necessarily bad but still intense.
To manage everything, she followed certain routines that helped her stay mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and especially physically healthy. She pointed out that maintaining her sobriety was a key part of that process. The singer also said:
“I had the Reinke's edema which is something that is called it's abuse of the vocal cords and you know being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help but also in my case it does not cause it so my voice always sounded like this.”
Miley Cyrus explained that her distinctive voice came from a large polyp on her vocal cord, which gave her the unique tone and texture people recognized. While this condition contributed to her sound, it also made singing challenging. To her, it felt like participating in a marathon wearing ankle weights.
She said that by the end of a long day, even her mom could tell she was exhausted just by how her voice sounded. Despite how difficult it could be, Miley Cyrus considered it both a blessing and a condition she had to manage.
She also mentioned having no plans to remove the polyp because surgery could risk changing her voice permanently.
