I have been a Marvel fan since I first saw Iron Man in 2008. That led to the birth of the iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The studio was gearing up for a film called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty at one point, which made me really excited. However, the legal issues and some disturbing details regarding Jonathan Majors' behavior came to light. He had played Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and was supposed to reprise this role in the next Avengers film.

As soon as the assault allegations against the actor surfaced, Marvel did the right thing by firing him and re-imagining the film as Avengers: Doomsday. It would have been released this week if things had not derailed.

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty was supposed to release this week

May 2, 2025, would have been like any other regular day for me until I realized that Marvel had initially planned to release Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on this day. Like any other Marvel fan who had been following the MCU, I was super excited for this project. Jonathan Majors was supposed to reprise his role as Kang, the antagonist, who would go against the superheroes. The film was announced at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con.

However, real life is stranger and more unpredictable than any fiction piece. In 2023, Majors was arrested for allegedly physically assaulting his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. The actor was found guilty and rightfully dropped from several films, including all the MCU ones.

The studio had to restructure the whole film, and it eventually became Avengers: Doomsday. While I had enjoyed Major's performance, I had no clue he was a predatory person in real life. Marvel pivoted towards Doctor Doom as the villain that the audiences can look forward to. But if, and only if, things had not gone sour, we would be watching Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on the big screen today.

Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday marks the Russo brothers' return to the director's chair in the MCU after Endgame. The 39th entry in the series, the film stars a host of actors reprising their roles as different superheroes. This includes Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Sebastian Stan (Bucky), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Patrick Stewart (Professor X) and Ian McKellen (Magneto). Robert Downey Jr., who was earlier Iron Man in the MCU, will be Doctor Doom in this film, which is scheduled to be released on May 1, 2026, exactly a year from now.
