British singer-songwriter James Blunt is opening up about his friendship with Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher. On June 4, the You’re Beautiful hitmaker spoke to People Magazine about the intimate relationship he shared with Fisher, who passed away in 2016, and said,

“I told her everything. I told her when I met my wife, we chose engagement rings together. She’s godmother to my child. I was with her the day before she died, and it was very, very sad.”

James Blunt, who is a father to two children, also revealed to the publication that he asked Fisher to be a godmother to his first son so that Fisher would take better care of herself. He said,

“What was saddest, I suppose, is how I asked her to be godmother to my child, saying, ‘I’m asking you to do this in the hope that you’ll look after yourself a little bit better.’ And she didn’t, really.”

About James Blunt’s close friendship with Carrie Fisher

Despite the fact that James Blunt and Carrie Fisher had an age difference of around 18 years, the two shared a deep bond. Fisher and Blunt’s friendship blossomed when the actress who played the popular Princess Leia in the Star Wars franchise invited the then-unknown musician to live at her house while recording his debut album.

In a piece written for The Guardian, James Blunt recalled how he became acquainted with Fisher. He wrote,

“This wild rollercoaster ride began in 2003 when I was invited to the restaurant 192 in Notting Hill. I was going out with a girl whose parents were family friends of Carrie’s and I sat beside her at lunch.”

When reminiscing about how he got invited to live at Fisher’s home, Blunt added,

“I had just got a record deal and was moving to LA. Carrie’s first question was: ‘What do you do?’ I said: ‘I’ve left the army to go to make an album in LA.’ Question number two was: ‘Where are you going to live?’ I said I didn’t know. Her reply – the third thing she ever said to me – was: ‘Well, you’re going to live with me.’ So I did just that.”

People Magazine noted that while Blunt and Fisher did not interact at first while the singer stayed at her property in Los Angeles, gradually, they developed a bond when one night Blunt overheard Fisher’s staff discussing her having a mental health “episode.” Blunt began speaking to the actress, and describes that that was the start of their friendship. People Magazine noted that Blunt said,

“Suddenly, we just had this kind of moment where I went and sat on the end of her bed, and she spoke to me until five in the morning. And the next day, I came in after the studio. I sat on the end of the bed, and we spoke until five in the morning, and we kind of did that for the rest of the time that she was alive.”

As per BBC, Blunt wrote his hit song, You’re Beautiful at Fisher’s house, even naming his first album Back to Bedlam as a commemoration of the time he spent at what he called “the madhouse.”

In 2024, James Blunt opened up about Fisher’s death during the Hay Festival, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and noted that he regrets that he couldn’t help the actress find her way out of her dr*g addiction. As per the publication, at the time of her death, Fisher’s system contained various amounts of dr*gs.
