The death of Dallas Cowboys player Marshawn Kneeland has raised questions and anger among his family members. After he was pursued by the police, he was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot in Frisco, Texas. The incident has devastated his family, and it has been left wondering what could have really transpired.

Before his death, Marshawn Kneeland was called before the police by his girlfriend, who claimed that he would do something to himself. She narrated to the police that he was armed and had had a history of mental health issues. Later in the night, the police attempted to pull over his vehicle due to a traffic violation.

Marshawn Kneeland escaped and was discovered dead in a nearby place. His family believes that the police could have done things in a different way. They believe that the police did not safeguard him in the middle of a mental crisis.

As one family member said, “I truly think they killed him.”

According to a report made by TMZ on November 6, 2025, the police reports indicate that Kneeland failed to halt as the officers attempted to pull him over to commit a traffic violation. The pursuit was terminated by an accident in which he crashed his vehicle and fled on foot. Officers searched the area, however without finding him at the moment. At a later time, about 1:30 AM, police found the body of Kneeland in a portable toilet at the scene of the crash.

Police reported his death as a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Audio of the dispatch showed that he had even sent his farewell messages to his family before he died. These facts indicated that Kneeland was emotionally troubled. According to the police, they had been responding to a call placed by the girlfriend of Kneeland the same night.

She had threatened them that he would "end it all". Nevertheless, events were soon out of control following the chase. Relatives are now asking questions as to whether law enforcement did the right thing in dealing with an individual who was evidently in crisis.

Family questions police handling of situation

Marshawn Kneeland’s relatives have expressed strong feelings about how police handled the situation. His family believes that law enforcement’s actions contributed to his death.

One relative said, “He needed help, not to be chased.”

They feel that if officers had slowed things down, Marshawn Kneeland might still be alive.

Family members also question why the police continued the pursuit after knowing about his mental health issues. They believe the chase increased his fear and confusion. His loved ones argue that mental health calls should be treated differently from criminal chases. They say officers should have brought in crisis-trained responders.

In interviews and online posts, the family has demanded more transparency. They want body camera footage and full details about the timeline of events.

For them, “We just want the truth,” sums up their ongoing call for answers.
