Celebrity chef and author Paula Deen opened up about her interaction with Ellen DeGeneres in her new documentary, Canceled: The Paula Deen Story. According to Entertainment Weekly, Deen was once a guest on the DeGeneres’ set. As a gift, she brought a large ham with her, despite not knowing that Ellen is a vegan.
In the documentary, which reportedly showed the clip from the interaction, Deen said:
“I walked out and I said, ‘I brought a ham for my favorite ham. Isn't that sweet?’ He's so heavy, he's your pig to keep up with now!”
Ellen then received the present, but wasn’t too happy about it. Deen recalled:
“She took it, laid it down, and didn't say a word. I found out later she was a vegetarian. She didn't eat meat. I felt like a t*rd.”
The media outlet also confirmed that Ellen DeGeneres was a vegan, though not a vegetarian. According to The Human League, in her 2018 comedy, Relatable, Ellen reflected on having a vegan diet, saying:
“The one thing that people get really upset about is when they find out I’m vegan—oh boy! ‘You’re vegan? Where do you get your protein?’ ‘Why do you care where I get my protein? Where do you get your riboflavin?”
Ellen DeGeneres shared that she had followed a vegan diet for eight years. She believed it was good for her health, said she felt the healthiest she had ever been, and mentioned that she truly enjoyed living that way.
The time when Paula Deen was on Ellen DeGeneres’ show
When Paula Deen appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ show, which was seemingly shot in a theme park. Ellen asked Deen what she thought about the food there, to which the chef said:
“Oh my gosh, I adore the food here.”
She said the last night she had a Turkey leg, which she found delicious. Deen also tried the funnel cake with fresh strawberries. This delicacy, according to her, was something to die for.
Ellen DeGeneres spoke about how people in the South were known for loving big hairstyles and showed Paula Deen an old picture of herself with big hair. Paula laughed and said that back in the 1960s, women used something called a wiglet, a small piece of hair that could be pinned in to make their hairstyles taller. She joked that the bigger the hair, the closer they felt to God, and she loved it.
Ellen then quipped:
“And you can store a turkey leg in there too so that's good.”
They were also joined by Deen’s sons: Jamie and Bobby. Ellen DeGeneres asked them what kind of mother Paula was, and Bobby said she was a tough one. He added:
“She's a very very tough personality never gives up very caring and loving. We're very very fortunate and if you can't tell by that uh she signs the paychecks as well.”
Jamie said his favorite quality about Paula Deen is that nobody could bring her down. The brothers then complimented their mother’s beauty with Ellen.
