Late-night host John Oliver put President Trump on blast in the latest episode of his Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.
The host and comedian snapped at Trump for hosting a 'Gatsby-themed' Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
Calling the move "pretty insulting," Oliver also fired shots at Trump, "unveiling" the newly remodelled toilets of the White House. For those unaware, on Friday, President Trump took to Truth Social and posted photos of the renovated bathroom that is connected to the Lincoln Bedroom.
“I renovated the Lincoln Bathroom in the White House. It was renovated in the 1940s in an art deco green tile style, which was totally inappropriate for the Lincoln Era. I did it in black and white polished Statuary marble. This was very appropriate for the time of Abraham Lincoln and, in fact, could be the marble that was originally there!”
The move has generated mostly negative reactions from all quarters, especially at a time when millions of Americans are still coming to terms with being taken off from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) over the Halloween weekend.
What did John Oliver say?
Oliver criticized Trump for the celebration. Echoing the sentiments of countless critics, Oliver highlighted the key issues and said,
“That is pretty tone deaf. And you know what? I will say to Trump what I said while watching David Harbour’s Architectural Digest video: ‘You are vastly overestimating how much I care about where you take a shit.’”
John Oliver added,
“It is odd to be posting bathroom remodel photos when so many are legitimately concerned about getting the government open again.”
The episode aired on Sunday and is now available to watch on YouTube.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time John Oliver has expressed his discontent with President Trump's renovation plans. In a segment of Last Week Tonight last month, Oliver mocked Trump's plans to demolish a part of the White House, calling it "too on the nose" and had said,
“Those images are distressing, especially when you know it’s all to build a giant ballroom in a style best described as ‘Med Spa Versailles’.”
Along with the pictures of the redone bathroom he shared, President Trump has also greenlit a plan to demolish the East Wing to make way for a $200 million ballroom and to give the White House a makeover.
The current government shutdown is expected to continue through this week, thus making it the longest shutdown in the history of the country.
