Justin Baldoni on his relationship with his father and how he dealt with a difficult year
Speaking to Samir Mourani on the Gent’s Talk Podcast in February 2025, Justin Baldoni reflected on how his healing journey led him to confront unresolved feelings toward his parents. During this time, he admitted that he had been especially tough on his father in his 20s and 30s.
He came to understand that his father, like everyone, had been doing his best despite being imperfect. He realized that expecting perfection from himself or others, including his parents, was unrealistic.
One of the aspects he appreciated most about his father was his openness to self-reflection and willingness to accept feedback. Justin Baldoni said:
“So what if my dad raised me and my mom raised me and they both had the perfect amount of imperfection that made this soup that mixed with where I was raised and how I was raised. And my genetic predisposition and my relationship with God and all of the things that they instilled in me that all of those imperfections created the being that I am.”
He shared a personal experience with Mourani, saying he had reached a point where he felt mentally and physically drained. He sent a message to his close friend Jamie and his company president, Tera, letting them know he wasn’t doing well.
Justin Baldoni admitted he was exhausted and hadn’t taken the time to rest and recover from a difficult year. Although he deeply cared about his work, he realized that the pressure of juggling many responsibilities had taken a toll on him.
He woke up early that morning feeling unwell and anxious, especially with his son being sick. After reflecting on everything, he recognized the need to slow down, heal, and be more intentional about committing to moving forward.
