The domestic box office again appears to be in full swing as recent releases, including Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, are proving to be bangers. The former has already earned $14.5 million in previews, while the latter has surpassed Dead Reckoning Part One and Fallout after bringing in $8.3 million in previews.
Lilo & Stitch’s success must come as a happy moment—not just because of the numbers, but due to the recent live-action disaster, Snow White, starring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler. Word was that Disney might be halting live-action remakes for a while after that bomb.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was expected to open well, following the franchise’s history—especially given the fact that this might be Ethan Hunt’s final run and considering its estimated $400 million budget. It had to deliver.
Other than Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Fear Street: Prom Queen, The Last Rodeo, and Fountain of Youth were released today as well—though the last one is for Apple TV+. Now, Karate Kid: Legends, The Phoenician Scheme, Mountainhead, and Tim Travers and the Time Traveler’s Paradox remain set for release in May.
How is the box office looking like without Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

Recently, Final Destination: Bloodlines was making headlines as it grabbed $4.2 million on Wednesday. The film was released on May 16, 2025, and opened with $51.6 million over the weekend. All in all, it has garnered $121 million globally.
Sinners and Thunderbolts followed on the same day, earning $1.7 million and $1.4 million domestically. Their global grosses, as of this writing, remain at $322 million and $331 million, respectively.
None of the other films were able to cross the million-dollar threshold on the day, with The Accountant 2 raking in $509K, A Minecraft Movie making $435K, and Hurry Up Tomorrow earning $435K. Overall, May 21—Wednesday—grossed $8.9 million at the domestic box office from its top 10 entries.
Following its strong preview numbers, Lilo & Stitch is expected to make a significant impact on the weekly box office totals, likely pushing those mid-range earners even further down the chart. The buzz surrounding Lilo & Stitch could also set the tone for summer family releases, giving Disney a much-needed win.
Looking ahead, we now have From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, How to Train Your Dragon, and 28 Years Later coming in June, if we’re talking about big releases. Even though several highly anticipated films are on the way, the Mission: Impossible film may still be around to compete with them when they release.
