British actress Miriam Margolyes, known for her role as Professor Pomona Sprout in the Harry Potter films, opened up about her health struggles. As per reports, she underwent a heart procedure in 2023.
However, in an interview with The Times, the actress revealed that she did not have much time left with her. According to the Mirror UK, she said:
“When you know that you haven't got long to live – and I'm probably going to die within the next five or six years, if not before, I'm loath to leave behind performing. It's such a joy. I yearn to play roles that don't confine me to wheelchairs, but I'm just not strong enough.”
Even though the procedure went well, she faced struggles with mobility as she developed spinal stenosis. Following her heart procedure, Miriam Margolyes sat down on the Table Manners podcast and shared that the procedure required the aortic valve to be replaced with one from a cow.
She said she hadn’t heard of the operation before but was glad it helped her avoid open-heart surgery, which would have been much more intense. However, as a result of spinal stenosis, she almost became disabled and had to use wheelchairs and other walking aids.
Speaking to Closer Magazine in 2024, Miriam Margolyes said:
“I can’t walk very well, and I’m registered disabled. I use all kinds of assistance. I’ve got two sticks and a walker, and they’re such a bore, but I’ve just got a mobility scooter, which is a lot of fun.”
“When you’re young, you never think about death” - Miriam Margolyes about how much she thought about death
In June 2023, Miriam Margolyes was interviewed by British Vogue, where she reflected on her idea of death. The conversation took place before she went for her heart procedure, and she said she was not afraid of the operation. Sharing her thoughts about death, the actress said,
“When you’re young, you never think about death. You just think about your next f**k basically. I think about death a lot.”
When asked how much she thought about death, Miriam Margolyes said:
“Oh, every day, for sure. Every morning when I get up I think, ‘Hmmm, another day,’ which maybe I wasn’t expecting.”
She admitted she used to be afraid of dying, but over time, she became more relaxed about it. She acknowledged that she tried to stay active, and open to trying new things, even though she was fully aware that life wouldn't go on forever.
In an interview with Metro, she opened up about dealing with ongoing physical pain and health issues that made life challenging, saying it was unlikely she would continue performing. Despite this, she shared how much she enjoyed engaging with audiences, and expressed her passion for Charles Dickens.
Later, during an appearance on Loose Women, Miriam Margolyes said that she expected to need caregivers in the future and wanted to ensure they were well-paid. She also admitted that a major reason for taking on work was to earn money, as she was paid for those appearances.
