Thunderbolts* is the most recent film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Jake Schreier directed the film, while the script was written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. Here's the official synopsis:

"After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap, an unconventional team of antiheroes must go on a dangerous mission that will force them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts."

Thunderbolts* was released on May 2, 2025, and received a positive critical response. Scarlett Johansson recently revealed that she got her name, as an executive producer, removed from the film. Let us find out the reason.

Scarlett Johansson reveals she got her EP credit removed from Thunderbolts*

Scarlett Johansson recently spoke to David Harbour for Interview Magazine, where she revealed that she was given an executive producer credit by Marvel on Thunderbolts*.

Harbour said,

“It’s the opening day of a movie that basically you are the seventh Thunderbolt in. Your character is all over this movie…. You are an executive producer on it. Congratulations."

In response, the actress said:

“I asked to have my credit removed because I wasn’t involved."

Her comment hints that the actress was given credit for contractual reasons. The film features Harbour and Florence Pugh as Red Guardian and Yelena Belova, respectively. They had first appeared alongside Johansson in the 2021 film Black Widow. She portrayed Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the MCU for more than a decade before the character was killed in Avengers: Endgame.

Talking about playing the character, she said:

“Some of the films that I did for Marvel engaged my character more than others. Like in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ with Chris [Evans], we were really dynamic. In some of the other films, the cast was so enormous and there was so much plot to serve that you start to feel like you’re a device to move it along. And if you’re committed to five and a half months of that, it’s like, ‘Okay. I can’t paint my nails, I can’t get a haircut.’ These sound like silly problems, but your identity is wrapped up in this job for a long time, and if you’re not doing engaging work as an actor, you feel a little cagey sometimes.”

Since Endgame, the actor has made it clear that she does not intend to return to the MCU. Meanwhile, Thunderbolts* introduces viewers to the New Avengers (which is also its alternative title). It has grossed $377.3 million at the box office.
