Shaun White and Nina Dobrev split one year after engagement: Everything we know so far

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev have called off their engagement and ended their relationship after five years together. The Olympic snowboarder and the Vampire Diaries actress had been together since 2019 and got engaged in October 2024. People Magazine confirmed the news of their split. Sources described the decision as mutual. It was reportedly out of "love and deep respect" for one another.

The news of the split comes almost a year after Shaun White proposed with a 5-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring during a private dinner in New York City.

Notably, many fans believe that their recent public appearances hinted at a quiet shift. Moreover, Dobrev walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, without her ring.

Shaun White and Nina Dobrev first crossed paths at an awards show in 2012. In 2019, they were booked as speakers at a motivational event hosted by Tony Robbins in Florida, where they connected. They went out for dinner afterward.

By early 2020, they were spending time together in Malibu and later confirmed their relationship on Instagram. Dobrev posted a video of herself cutting Shaun White's hair during quarantine. During the early days of the pandemic, they moved in together and spent lockdown.

Over the next few years, the couple were a regular presence on red carpets and social media. Dobrev was often by White's side as he trained for his final Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022. The three-time gold medalist praised her support, calling her a "lifesaver" as he prepared to retire from competitive snowboarding.

By 2024, speculation about an engagement surfaced. In October 2024, he surprised Dobrev with a planned dinner at New York's Golden Swan, where he got down on one knee. She later admitted she went into "shock" during the moment, but said yes.

In a statement about their relationship, Shaun White mentioned:

"We have a nice little system of how to stay in touch. Plane tickets are pretty much booked for any opportunity that we can go see one another. So, I know during the holiday break, we are going to meet up, and we are going to meet up again probably around Christmas time.

He also added:

"Anything that happens in between, then I will jet over and see her. You just make it work. I think that’s the goal of it all and the key to it all is just making the time. [Nina's] super organized and on top of it, so I give it to her. She always finds a way to make it happen."

Their last public outing together was on August 31, 2025. They were photographed holding hands at a Los Angeles farmers market. A week later, Dobrev attended the Eternity premiere in Toronto without her engagement ring. She also unpinned her original engagement announcement from Instagram. That post was pinned at the top of her profile for a long time.
