Lorde’s fashion sense rarely misses, often praised for her eclectic and avant-garde ensembles. For the 2025 Met Gala, the songstress turned heads in her metallic co-ords — and, as expected, the internet had a field day reacting to her strapless top.
The Ribs singer emerged at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 5 for the annual fundraising event. In a viral clip on X (formerly Twitter), Lorde is spotted gracefully ascending the cobalt-blue carpeted stairs, her silver coat dangling in one arm, showing off a striking pleated skirt. Fans also raved about her low-braided tresses and effortless “clean girl” makeup.
But what truly stole the moment was her bare back, a daring detail that sent the social media abuzz. While many lauded the Solar Power artist’s bold choice of clothing, others couldn’t resist cracking jokes about her barely-there top.
“She forgot the back of her top yo,” @swolemeta_ joked.
“Industrial strength elegance, brought to you by aisle 9 and a roll of silver Duck Tape,” @tropicaltweets added.
“How is that staying on!?!” @ticktocker30 questioned.
“What is this supposed to be,” @roroxx16_ said with a skull emoji.
“Why do they all wear clothes that look ridiculous,” @_SamStClair_ wrote.
“Is that going to hurt when she peels it off?” @exitplanetdvst asked, obviously curious.
“love lorde but baby what was that,” @ricehoe said with a reference to the singer’s new single What Was That.
Meanwhile, fans still praised Lorde’s 2025 Met Gala look. And with her stormy silver aesthetic, she looked nothing short of royal.
"omg. she took a bath, brushed her teeth, combed her hair, outside smiling. and she released a banger. Lorde 2014 is so back!” @McFrankoSA wrote.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this dainty. I’m here for it,” @fineasskent said with a crying emoji.
“Best I’ve seen her look. 10/10,” @MaliyaFransi stated.
Others also gushed under the replies with comments like “ate,” while some noted she looked like Kylie Jenner at first glance.
Superfine: 2025 Met Gala theme honors legacy of Black dandyism
This year’s Met Gala embodies the theme Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, an inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
The dress code, Tailored for You, encouraged its legion of attendees to embrace self-identity through their personalized style.
Andrew Bolton, the Metropolitan Museum's head curator, said:
“I feel that the show itself marks a really important step in our commitment to diversifying our exhibitions and collections, as well as redressing some of the historical biases within our curatorial practice.”
He went on:
“It’s very much about making fashion at the Met more of a gateway to access and inclusivity.”
