Career highlights and legacy of Verónica Echegui

Born in 1983, Echegui gained recognition for her role in I Am Juani, released in 2006. The movie, directed by Bigas Luna, earned her a Goya Award nomination for ‘Best New Actress.’

Echegui made her television debut with short appearances in programs such as A New Life and Paco and Veva (2004) on Spanish Television. However, her break in I Am Juani became a major turning point in her professional career.

In the following year, the actress appeared in Touch the Sky (2007), directed by Argentine director Marcos Carnevale, and, alongside Carmen Maura, in The Least of the Bad (2007), directed by Antonio Hernández. Echegui ventured into Hollywood in 2013 with the film The Cold Light of Day, directed by Mabrouk El Mechri and featuring Sigourney Weaver and Bruce Willis.

In 2016, Verónica Echegui collaborated with Mexican director Gael García Bernal on You’re Killing Me, Susana. Through such assignments, she established a career beyond Spain while maintaining connections with the industry, particularly with Catalan cinema. In that same year, she directed the audiovisual adaptation of a best-seller.

In recent years, Verónica Echegui worked in the movie The Offering (2020), directed by Ventura Durall, alongside Àlex Brendemühl and Anna Alarcón, earning her second Gaudí Award.

She received her fourth Goya nomination that same year for her performance in the musical comedy Explode, Explode, although the Spanish Film Academy did not confer the prize upon her. She received her sole Goya prize in 2022 for her directorial efforts on the short film Wolf Totem.
