Rex Ryan was overcome with emotion as he honored New York Jets icon Nick Mangold, his voice cracking on live TV as he paid tribute to the beloved center just hours after news broke of his shocking death at 41.

On Oct. 26, the longtime coach fought back tears on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, calling the late athlete “such a great young man” and “way too young” to be gone.

"It's brutal. [He was] such a great young man. I had the pleasure of coaching him for all six years with the Jets."

Rex Ryan guided Nick Mangold through six gritty seasons in green and white. He recounted the time when his stint as a coach for the New York-based football team was culminating, and Mangold still gave his all despite his injury.

"He wanted to play for me. That's what I remember about this kid. He was awesome, and just way too young. I feel so bad for his wife and family."

Heartfelt words and praises poured in for the late NFL star in a news release by his former team. Jets Chairman Woody said:

"Nick was more than a legendary center. He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football."

The chairman also praised Mangold for who and how he was off-field.

"Off the field, Nick's wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family."

Nick Mangold's death came days after he reached out to fans to ask for a kidney donor. While undergoing dialysis, he took time to post a letter via his Instagram, where he wrote:

"In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time."

He went on to say that he didn't have a family able to donate; hence, he was reaching out to "My JETS community." He said that he needed a kidney donor with Type O blood, and cited a link where the possible donor could reach him.

Nick Mangold concluded his message with gratitude to his family and loved ones, adding that he had been staying optimistic despite his situation.

"I'm thankful for my family, who have been my rock every step of the way. This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me."
