“This is a mess” - Miley Cyrus reveals how she repaired Relationship with dad Billy Ray Cyrus following family feud

Miley Cyrus is opening up for the very first time about repairing her relationship with father Billy Ray Cyrus. During her appearance on the podcast, Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky on June 10, Cyrus candidly confessed that she spent the year learning to communicate better with her family members.

The Hannah Montana actress shared an important insight into family dynamics as she stated,

“I watched what happens when you don't clean things up as they’re happening, they really do stack and then all of a sudden you go, ‘Oh my god it's been 10 years and this is a mess that I barely even know how to start,’ this is like emotional hoarding.”

Continuing, Cyrus shared that the strategy she used to repair her relationships was built on learning to be together without conflict. While speaking to Monica Lewinsky, Miley Cyrus said,

“But I just kind of bust through the pile that’s stacked, and just go, ‘I’m here, you’re here, let’s start by having a good time together, and then as we start bringing some like happiness and joy into each other’s life, then we’ll just be in a better place to have these conversations.’ Because I’d rather get it balanced first.”

Why Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus’ relationship soured

As per her own admission, conflict in Miley Cyrus’ family centred around her parents, Billy Ray and Tish’s divorce. Billy Ray, a country singer-songwriter, married Tish in 1993, as per People Magazine. In addition to having three children during their relationship, Billy Ray also adopted Tish’s two children from a previous marriage.

People Magazine noted that Billy Ray and Tish first became estranged in 2010 when the singer filed for divorce. While the couple reconciled at the time, Tish filed for divorce three years later, but the couple mended their relationship once again. At the time, Tish wrote on social media that attending couples therapy helped her and her husband.

People Magazine noted that Tish filed for divorce again in 2022, revealing that the former couple had, at the time, been living separately for two years. The parents of five moved on from each other, with Billy Ray getting engaged to Australian singer Firerose a few months after Tish filed for divorce.

During her appearance on the Reclaiming podcast, Cyrus noted that she took her mother’s side during the divorce, saying,

“Half of us weren't speaking to each other at one point…I had a lot of loyalty to my mom, the way that families do when parents get divorced, you know.”

According to E!News, the Cyrus family’s soured relations often created headlines in the media. The news outlet noted that during her Grammys acceptance speech in 2024, Miley Cyrus acknowledged only one of her sisters, Brandi and her mother, Tish.

Early in 2025, Trace, who was adopted by Billy Ray early into his relationship with Tish, took to social media to pen an emotional note addressed to his father. While acknowledging Billy Ray’s impact on his life, Trace wrote,

“The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life. Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now…Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you’ve pushed all of us away.”

E! News reported that a few days later, Billy Ray took to YouTube shorts to write that he was praying for his “sons and daughters…and their mother.”

Later in March, Billy Ray wrote a tribute on Instagram for the musical achievements of his daughters, Miley and Noah. While appreciating the trajectories of their respective careers, Billy Ray added,

“You are witnessing in real time what it feels like for a Dad who with in less than one weeks time has had his ass kicked and his mind blown by not one …but two of his own daughters.”

Miley Cyrus also addressed fixing channels of communications with her family members during her appearance for the podcast, Reclaiming. She said,

“This year was all of my family putting those lines of communications back together.”

Cyrus also confessed that she wanted her family to be able to confide in her. She said,

“I'm working on another album and that's a song that I'm working on called Secrets, and I wrote this song about my dad because I wanted him to tell me, even though they were secrets, even though I didn't really want to know, I wanted to be the one he felt safe enough to tell me the things that were damning and damaging to the family."

Continuing, Miley Cyrus added,

"But I wanted him to think that as a middle child I'm old enough that I could take some of that, you know, and I always wanted my family to feel like I was the safe place that I always had the white flag when they came to talk to me.”

It seems like the Cyrus family’s conflicts have been addressed and they have finally been able to make amends with each other. Billy Ray’s frequent Instagram posts featuring his children is a testament to the fact that all is well with the family.
