Thor 5 has reportedly entered the development stage at Marvel Studios. The forthcoming superhero film will be a direct sequel to 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder and the fifth entry in the Thor film series. The last two films, including Thor: Ragnarok, were directed by Taika Waititi.

However, Waititi might not return to the director’s chair for this next Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) installment. This news may not surprise viewers, given the mixed critical response Love and Thunder received. Let’s take a closer look at what’s known so far—news that could excite fans awaiting another Thor adventure.

Thor 5 is currently in development

According to The Hollywood Handle, via insider Daniel Richtman, Marvel Studios has begun development on Thor 5. The series has been on pause since the release of Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022, which received generally mixed reviews from critics.

The same report also states that Taika Waititi will not direct the upcoming film. He previously helmed both Ragnarok and Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth may return as the titular Asgardian god, though this has not yet been confirmed. If true, the film would mark Waititi’s departure from the Thor franchise and the broader MCU.

Thor series started with the 2011 release. It was the fourth MCU film and was directed by Kenneth Branagh. Starring Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins, among others. The film grossed $449.3 million and was followed by a sequel, Thor: The Dark World. This Alan Taylor-directed film follows Thor and his brother Loki (played by Hiddleston) trying to save the Nine Realms from the clutches of the Dark Elves. It minted $644 million at the box office, inspiring makers to come up with Thor: Ragnarok, which was helmed by Waititi.

The film received critical praise and ended up earning $855 million at the ticket window. The most recent entry in the series, Thor: Love and Thunder, focuses on the protagonist going against Gorr the God Butcher. Besides these films, Chris Hemsworth has also reprised his role in other MCU titles, including Avengers, Infinity War, Age of Ultron, and Endgame, among others. He, along with Hiddleston, is also returning in the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Thor 5 might take off exactly where the previous film left off, or the makers might come up with a different narrative that is not attached to the earlier entries.
