After being nominated four times, Tom Cruise will finally receive an Oscar, but it's not for a film or an acting performance. Instead, the Academy has decided to present the "last movie star" with an honorary Oscar statue for his continuous advocacy for a theatrical experience. Recognizing his talent, the press release from the Academy reads:

"One of the most recognized and highest-grossing actors of all time, Cruise has been a committed advocate of the theatrical experience, and he helped to usher the industry through a challenging time during the COVID-19 pandemic."

Academy President Janet Yang addresses Cruise, saying:

"Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all."

Cruise will receive this award at the 16th annual Governors Awards alongside production designer Wynn Thomas and choreographer and actor Debbie Allen. Music icon and philanthropist Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. They will be awarded on November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood on November 16.

Tom Cruise has been a strong advocate of the theatrical experience.

While known for his death-defying adventures as the IMF agent Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise has worked on all kinds of projects and has been a vocal supporter of cinema and experiencing it on the big screen.

During his recent press tour for Mission Impossible—The Final Reckoning, he was asked about watching the movie in cinemas. He said,

"You're gonna want to see this in IMAX, you're gonna want to see it on the biggest screen, you're gonna want to see it with the sound. That is how it was designed. You want that packed audience [in cinemas]. That's how I love seeing movies and that's the films I make. It's a different experience to see it on the big screen."

Tom Cruise shares some valuable advice for the actors working in cinemas.

Tom Cruise was recently at BFI Southbank in London, where he received a British Film Institute fellowship. During a conversation with Edith Bowman, he shared a few tips with the young actors.

“It is important to understand the tools around you. There is tech. It is like understanding the stage as an actor but for a lot of artists it is not taught in film school: how to understand the lens and what it can do, and why there is eye movement and recognize the effect it has," he said.

Cruise further added,

“I always tell actors: spend time in the editing room, produce a movie, study old movies, recognize what the composition is giving you, know what those lenses are, understand the lighting and how to use it for your benefit. Understand the art form to that degree. Brando absolutely understood lighting; all the greats did.”
