Tom Cruise sets Guinness World Record for fiery stunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning

Tom Cruise has executed death-defying stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise since the beginning. People remember him hanging from a plane in Rogue Nation, and that is just one of the things he has done to make the action seem exciting as well as authentic. His most recent outing in the franchise is Mission: Impossible —The Final Reckoning, which was released on May 23, 2025, by Paramount Pictures.

Here's the official synopsis, per IMDb:

Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.

The actor has registered his name in the Guinness World Record for performing a stunt several times in the film.

Tom Cruise has entered the Guinness World Record for doing a stunt in the latest M:I film, where he jumps off a plane with a burning parachute. The catch is that he did it 16 times, setting the records for the most burning parachute jumps.

Per Collider, prior to doing the stunt, Cruise said:

“If this is twisted while it’s burning, I’m going to be spinning and burnt. I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite in 10 seconds. We’re going to be real smart. I’m not saying be risky. We don’t take risks, obviously.”

There have been reports that it's the end of Cruise's stint as Ethan Hunt, a character he has been playing for decades. Asked about the same, he said:

“I’d rather just people see it and enjoy and we’ve had an amazing time doing it and it’s been a lot of fun and I just want you all to enjoy it. Enjoy this and know everything is the culmination has come to this moment right now.”

Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning is the eighth film in the franchise, and is directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who has written it with Erik Jendresen). Here is the list of its cast members:

  • Hayley Atwell as Grace
  • Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
  • Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
  • Pom Klementieff as Paris
  • Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge

So far, the film has grossed over $125 million domestically in three weeks since its release. With a budget range of $300–400 million, the film is one of the most expensive projects of all time. Its total earning so far stands at $356 million, where $125.1 million is from the domestic market while $231.2 million is from the international box office.
