Zoë Kravitz is currently promoting her latest film, Caught Stealing, which is set in the late 1990s. While reflecting on the era, she spoke about her love for certain aspects but also criticized some of the decade’s TV themes. In her exclusive interview with People Magazine, published on August 29, Kravitz shared how she now finds such themes distasteful and hopes they are never revived. She said:
"We can keep that there."
In the movie Caught Stealing, Zoë Kravitz plays the role of Yvonne, a paramedic living in New York with her boyfriend Hank Thompson, played by Austin Butler. The movie, based on the book of the same name, also features other prominent stars such as Regina King and Matt Smith. It even includes an uncredited appearance by Laura Dern, who plays Austin Butler’s mother in the film.
More from Zoë Kravitz's new interview: The actress opens up about finding several 90s TV themes distasteful
Zoë Kravitz, in her recent interview with People Magazine, recalled the sense of nostalgia she felt while filming. The outlet noted that filming a story set in New York nearly thirty years ago also reminded her of things she would prefer not to see return. One example was the prevalent homophobic themes found in many ’90s shows like Friends. She said:
"Super homophobic jokes on mainstream television. If you watch Friends now you're like, 'Whoa, that's....'Oh, so much in Friends. Like, things that aren't punchlines are punchlines. It's wild. So maybe that?"
To this, her costar Austin Butler added:
"That's crazy. Yeah, keep that in the '90s!"
At the same time, she reflected positively on other aspects of the ’90s. In her interview, the Big Little Lies actress said that there were many aspects of the decade, like the fashion, that she loved revisiting through her movie. She said:
"[I'm] really nostalgic for that time. Then also the fashion, all that stuff's so cool. New York City and the grunge. ... It's a good time."
Austin Butler also quipped about the aspects of the 1990s he enjoyed revisiting, saying:
"Even just being in the apartment [on set] and seeing the Nintendo 64 on top of the TV. We had the GoldenEye [video game], I saw that."
Zoë Kravitz, who had to use the then-popular Nokia mobile phone model for her character, added that she missed using it, and said:
"Or my cell phone was that Nokia brick thing."
Caught Stealing, directed by Darren Aronofsky, was released last week on August 29 and is now playing in theatres across the US.
