Mel Gibson and Rosalind "Rose" Ross quietly ended their nine-year relationship, emphasizing in a joint statement that their priority is co-parenting their 8-year-old child.

On Tuesday, Dec. 30, the pair announced their split after nearly a decade, releasing a statement through People:

"Although it's sad to end this chapter in our lives, we are blessed with a beautiful son and will continue to be the best parents possible."

The outlet added that the former couple had separated about a year ago.

Mel Gibson and Rosalind Ross first met in 2014 through mutual friends. He was 58, while Ross was 23.

The couple walked the 74th Golden Globes red carpet together on Jan. 9, 2017, while Rosalind Ross was pregnant with their first child.

Mel Gibson was also nominated for Best Director at the time for Hacksaw Ridge, his directorial debut after a decade, making the moment extra special. Gibson said then that it was a "passion project."

"If you're gonna spend 18 months or two years of your life on something, you better make sure it's worthwhile. You better be invested on some level. Otherwise, it's a long two years. It's like watching paint dry."

An insider shared with People how ecstatic the couple was.

"Mel and Rose are so excited about the baby. Mel loves being a dad and he and Rose can't wait to be parents together. The last two years have been some of his happiest years he's ever had."

On Jan. 20 that year, Gibson and Ross welcomed their son, Lars Gerard Gibson. Another source also told the outlet:

"They're thrilled and Lars is adorable. Their family is all around them and Mel is over the moon. They're home and everybody is healthy and happy!"

Meanwhile, Gibson has eight other children from his previous relationships.

The Braveheart actor shares daughter Hannah and six sons, Christian, Edward, William, Louis, Milo, and Thomas, with ex-wife Robyn Moore; and a 16-year-old daughter, Lucia, with Oksana Grigorieva, a pianist.

Meanwhile, Gibson and Ross's home in Malibu was destroyed by the Los Angeles wildfires. The acting vet was out of time when the blaze occurred, but thankfully, his family and their chickens were evacuated safely. He shared with NewsNation his relief:
