Charlamagne Tha God reflected on his question to South African singer Tyla Laura Seethal when she appeared on The Breakfast Club podcast in June 2024.
During the podcast, Charlamagne Tha God asked Seethal about how she balanced her personal and professional lives. The Been Thinking singer said it was mainly due to a strong support system. She said she tried to separate the boundaries between the two.
At this point, Charlamagne Tha God asked her:
“School me on these debates that they be having about your identity as a South African colored person. What does that even mean?”
Although the singer didn't answer the question, someone from the singer’s team seated behind suggested that they should move on from that question. Charlamagne Tha God said:
“Oh, I like that. We keeping that in the interview too. I like when they talk from the back and say, ‘We can’t.’ I like that.”
Meanwhile, in a recent conversation with DJ Vlad, Charlamagne Tha God was asked if the podcast attempted to ruin Tyla’s creator by asking a question about her race. He immediately said it wasn’t the case and it had nothing to do with the podcast. He said he was doing his job, just like how any other media platform would have, and added:
“If anybody, you know, hurt Tyla, it was her label.”
When asked how her label was to be blamed, Charlamagne Tha God said they didn’t prepare her well to answer the type of question he asked during the podcast.
Charlamagne Tha God said his question was not meant to attack Tyla
Charlamagne Tha God said any label or publicist must be aware of the kind of questions their artists are supposed to encounter. He said it wasn’t the first time she had been asked the question about her identity. He also mentioned that he had seen Tyla answer similar questions on social media platforms.
According to Charlamagne Tha God, she must be prepared well to answer. When DJ Vlad asked what the question was, he said:
“To go back, man, they came in, which you never do on Breakfast Club, cause I don't even know why they would even try to play with us like that, as if we've ever followed those rules. They came in there with a list of things they did not want us to ask her.”
Speaking about the motivation behind asking the question, he stated:
“But I asked that question to give her an opportunity to answer. It's not like I attacked her and was like, ‘You said such and such.’ I was like, ‘Yo, what was up with, you know, you saying blah blah blah about, you know, you're colored.’ And she just turned around and looked at the label.
Charlamagne explained that Tyla’s team gave him a list of topics they didn’t want him to ask about, like Kai Cenat and Chris Brown. He felt that the restrictions made the interview pointless and told the label he wouldn’t follow those rules.
He said the team should have prepared Tyla better because when he asked the question, she immediately looked back at her label representatives.
