Elizabeth Franz was an esteemed film, TV, and stage actress who had career that was spanned decades. She died in 2025 at the age of 84 due to cancer and a "severe reaction" to the treatment drugs. Her passing has resulted in people looking back upon her long career and the legacy she left behind.

Franz has done numerous acts in movies and performances, but her first screen performance is not well-reported in the media. She is remembered to have taken up early roles in The Secret of My Success (1987), School Ties (1992), and Sabrina (1995). The 1987 film, The Secret of My Success, produced and directed by Herbert Ross, is considered her first onscreen debut, wherein she played the role of Grace Foster.

Her profession was strengthened with time because she worked both on the stage as well as the screen. Franz was popularly known for her strong performances in big Broadway productions. Her work was later recognized and awarded, which made her contribution to American theater history an established fact.

One of the first movies in which Franz became widely known was The Secret of My Success in 1987. It is through this movie that she started reaching a wide audience after honing her skills on the stage. This role aided her transition into more projects on screen in the succeeding years.

She then starred in School Ties in 1992. Her role in Sabrina in 1995 was another factor that catapulted her into fame and associated her with other big Hollywood names.

Franz also had numerous television credits along with her work in the movies. She has appeared in shows like As the World Turns, Roseanne, and Gilmore Girls. She also appeared as a guest in the Law and Order franchise. These parts kept her busy onscreen as she kept up with stage work.

Elizabeth Franz had been most active on Broadway. She won great awards and nominations during her theater career. The 1999 Tony Award, Best Featured Actress in a Play, was given to her after her appearance as Linda Loman in the production of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.

In 1983 and 2002, she was also nominated for Tony Awards for Brighton Beach Memoirs and Morning’s at Seven, respectively. While performing Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, she simultaneously starred in Another World from 1982 to 83 as the infamous villain, Alma Rudde.

Franz has also won an Obie Award for her performance in Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You. She still featured in numerous popular productions like Broadway Bound, The Cherry Orchard, and Morning's at Seven.

In 2003, she was honored with the Dramatist Guild Fund's Lifetime Achievement in the Theater award, also referred to as The Madge Evans & Sidney Kingsley Awards for Excellence in Theater, for her service to the stage over a long period of time.
