Actress and author Jamie Lee Curtis shared candid details about her work beyond acting. On May 10, 2025, Curtis sat down with Sharyn Alfonsi on CBS’s 60 Minutes, where she reflected on her roles as a spokesperson for Activia, L’EGGS, and Hertz.

When asked why she took those jobs, the actress responded:

“For the most part, because they allowed me to stay home with my kids. So, I am an imperfect, you know, working mom because no working moms are perfect.”

She went on:

“I am looking at one. You are speaking to one. We make it look good. We think we have done it, but the truth is we feel badly but I know how much time away from them I spent in pursuit of my own creativity.”

In an interview with Today in 2021, the actress explained that one of the reasons she chose to do commercials was that it helped her make up for the time she had to spend away from her family.

It gave her the chance to earn a living while staying close to home. She shared that she often struggled with figuring out how to balance everything, being a mother, a wife, and maintaining her career, all while needing to be away for work.

Even while shooting A Fish Called Wanda, Jamie Lee Curtis remembered that she would become emotional while going to work.

Acting was never on Jamie Lee Curtis’ career plans

Jamie Lee Curtis was born to Tony Curtis and Janet Lee, two well-known personalities in Hollywood. Even though she had the pedigree, she did not plan to venture into acting. It was one of her friends who asked her to audition for Universal Studios.

After getting a seven-year contract from Universal Studios, she dropped out of college. The actress then landed her debut role in the 1978 horror film Halloween. She was 19 at that time. Looking back on her acting journey, she said:

“My life hinged on a couple seconds I never saw coming. I never thought I would be an actor in my life. My teeth were the color of concrete. They were gray. I was cute, not pretty. And so I never saw that coming.”

Jamie Lee Curtis shared that after getting her big break with Halloween, she landed two roles soon after, one on The Love Boat, where she appeared alongside her mother, Janet Leigh, and another on an episode of Charlie's Angels.

When asked if she was concerned that sharing her journey to sobriety might hurt her career, Jamie Lee Curtis admitted she was more worried that doing a yogurt commercial with a bathroom-related theme would affect her image. She joked about it but said it was true.

Reflecting on her growth, she felt she had emotionally gone beyond where her parents had reached, particularly through sobriety.

She mentioned that her mother had been limited by the expectations and restrictions of the entertainment industry and likely wouldn’t have approved of her role in The Last Showgirl, where she revealed her true self. Curtis felt she had found a sense of freedom that her parents didn’t have.
