What did Jason Collins say about his coming-out story?
Jason Collins has come out as gay. While delivering a speech at UNINTERRUPTED in 2019, he said he got a call from his grandmother one day in December 2012. Remembering her, he said:
“My grandmother's name is Beatrice Jackson. And since I was a kid, we've lovingly referred to her as Bacca. Bacca was raised in Hodge, Louisiana, a small town East of Shreveport.”
Collins mentioned that Bacca grew up in difficult times. He said she valued education so much that she finished her college degree. Because of her, education became important in his family, and one of the reasons he went to Stanford University. She was also religious and strong, never afraid to face challenges.
That was why he felt nervous when he had to talk to her on that winter day. However, he added:
“There was something I needed to tell her, and I wanted her to hear it from me first. But by the time she called, she'd already heard the news from my mother. That I was gay. In truth, I was terrified of her reaction.”
Bacca said she was aware of it, and she loved him. This was the moment Collins realized that he could overcome everything.
Why May 6, 2013, was no ordinary day for Jason Collins?
During the same speech, Jason Collins said that May 6, 2013, was a different and important day in his life. This is because on this day, he came out to the people in the NBA. He said as soon as the news went viral, he received a call from Oprah Winfrey. Recalling his family’s support, he said:
“Originally, my family said they would take a back seat to all of the media requests, that it was best that I do all of the talking. But, for Oprah they would definitely make an exception.”
Jason Collins shared that his mother got excited, saying she needed to get her hair and nails done and even borrow a scarf from a friend to look good for Oprah’s interview. Soon after, he got a call from President Obama, who told him that what he did would help someone he might never even meet. Collins thought it was amazing to know that his actions could make life easier for someone else.
