British comedian John Oliver seemed to have secured a win in selling his “Cabernet SauvignJohn” wine. On the November 2 episode of the Last Week Tonight with John Oliver show, the comedian announced the launch of the wine which was a limited edition. However, according to outlets like Late Nighter and Red 94, the online inventory sold out less than a day after its release.

The same is also reflected on the wine’s official website, cabernetsauvignjohn.com. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Oliver has a net worth of $80 million. Per a statement on the wine’s website, he said:

“I have bought rat p*rn, jock straps, and the contents of an upstate New York Red Lobster. I have started a church, antagonized a coal baron, and had my name placed upon a sewage plant and a koala chlamydia ward, and I was just as good a man then as I am now. Which is to say, a solid B-minus. Enjoy this wine, it financially benefits my employer in no way.”

When John Oliver struck a two-year deal with HBO, he was set to receive a payment of $8 million per year for hosting the Last Week Tonight show. The deal kept on extending year after year and it now stands at $30 million till 2027. Oliver is married to Kate Norley. In 2017, the couple got an apartment in New York City for less than $10 million.

John Oliver became a registered US citizen in 2019. He has two sons, whom he shares with Kate.

John Oliver on selling the wine at a financial loss and his American identity

According to LateNighter, the wine was not sold at a great gain. Moreover, the earnings, amounting to $50,000 in total, would help California-based food banks. When John Oliver announced the launch on November 2, he said:

“Not only are we selling this at a financial loss but from the sales, we are also donating a total of $50,000 to 16 food banks in California.”

In March 2025, Oliver was a guest on Russell Howard’s show, where he asked how he was adjusting to America. The comedian replied:

“Well, it's my home, right? So, it’s my home. I love it there. So, I would rather that my home was not in kind of emotional flames. So, it's very sad watching the news in depth and in detail because most people don't have time, you know, to look at how bad things actually are. And unfortunately, if you do and you realize the depth of despair that we actually should be in, then it's not ideal on a human emotional level.”

John Oliver said that despite everything, writing jokes felt nice because he was doing something about his sadness. When Howard asked how he felt being an outsider to American culture, Oliver said that this identity helped him in his comedic endeavors. He said the moment he opened his mouth, it gave the impression that he “did not belong there necessarily.”

After staying for a decade, he said he got his skin in the game and has an emotional investment in America.
