Actress Kristin Chenoweth opened up about the backlash she received for her comments about Charlie Kirk following his death. In September 2025, Chenoweth commented on one of Turning Point USA’s Instagram posts, writing:

“I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree but appreciated some perspectives. What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.”

Her comment was reportedly not well-received by social media users. Meanwhile, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published on November 3, the interviewer asked if the controversy following her comment had been tough for her. The actress replied:

“It was tough on me, but I’m not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it. It nearly broke me, and that’s all I’m going to say. You probably know my heart, so you probably know.”

According to Page Six, Kristin Chenoweth also shared an Instagram Story offering prayers for Charlie Kirk’s family as they were going through the loss. She also condemned the shooting as:

“Such a sad, senseless, and disgusting act! Wow....prayers for the Kirk family and prayers for our nation.”

The interview with The Hollywood Reporter was primarily about her Broadway return, the opening night of which is scheduled for November 9. However, during the conversation, the actress mentioned that she wished the date were sooner. She noted that there wouldn’t be any more changes to the show, while adding that doing a new musical isn’t an easy job. In the Broadway musical, Kristin Chenoweth plays the role of Jackie Siegel in The Queen of Versailles.

Kristin Chenoweth on getting a call from Stephen Schwartz, political beliefs and Broadway

The musical’s lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz. Chenoweth said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Schwartz called her. He was in the process of writing something for her, and she felt the gesture was sweet. Looking back on her conversation with Schwartz, Kristin Chenoweth said:

“I was really tired from the masks and COVID. Remember that? So he and [director] Michael Arden called me and said, “We have your next show: The Queen of Versailles.” I was like, “Oh, French! It’s a period piece.””

She went on to say:

“And they said, “No, it’s about Jackie Siegel. The documentary.” Then they told me the conceit of it. And I thought, “Oh, this is so interesting.” So he played me one of the songs and that was it.”

Elsewhere during the conversation, Kristin Chenoweth said that she had been quite open about her political beliefs. She said those who knew her were aware of her views. However, she noted:

“But as time has gone on with this piece, it’s art imitating life.”

Sharing her thoughts about Broadway, she said that she loved it as she was someone from the theater. She felt returning to Broadway was more about making a conscious decision, as she had tried other things in her acting career.

Elsewhere during the conversation, Kristin Chenoweth was asked if she would appear in the sequel to Wicked. She said she was unsure if she should answer the question. However, she said no, but was excited to see how it turned out.
