Josh Hutcherson was once vehemently considered to play Peter Parker in Spider-Man before Andrew Garfield took the role in The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012. He was still an up-and-coming teen actor in need of his big break at the time.
Hutcherson described that experience in a recent podcast interview as the way this moment had influenced his career.
He told him that the rejection was heavy then. However, soon after his parting with Spider-Man, he secured one of the largest parts in his life, playing Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games.
Nowadays, Hutcherson looks back at that moment from a new perspective. What would be considered a setback became a chance to change the career. His narrative demonstrates how rapidly the situation can change in Hollywood.
Josh Hutcherson's Spider-Man audition and rejection

Josh Hutcherson confirmed that he was in the running for Spider-Man before Andrew Garfield was cast. On December 8, 2025, episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s on Me podcast, he shared how close he came to the role.
He said, “A few months before I got cast in Hunger Games, I was in the running to be Spider-Man.”
At the time, Hutcherson was still a teenager. The role meant a lot to him. When he found out he did not get the part, the rejection hit hard.
He explained, “I got told ‘no’ which, as a teenager, was heartbreaking because I obviously wanted to be Spider-Man.”
For any young actor, losing a role like that can feel final.
Still, Hutcherson did everything he could to prepare for the role. In a 2024 interview with Wired, he shared how he trained for the audition.
He said, “One of my friends who formerly worked as my stunt double helped me prepare.”
The two trained together and even filmed stunt scenes.
Hutcherson added, “We decided to shoot me doing some Spider-Man stunts, but I didn’t get it.”
The effort showed his commitment, even though it did not work out.
How The Hunger Games changed everything

Soon after losing Spider-Man, Hutcherson’s career took a sudden turn. He was cast as Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games. The film became a massive success. It launched him into global fame almost overnight.
Looking back, Josh Hutcherson sees how fast his life shifted.
He said on the podcast, “Hunger Games came out of nowhere. It just changed everything.”
The franchise ran for four films. He starred alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth. The series became one of the biggest YA franchises of its time.
But with that success came personal challenges. In a November interview with Variety, Hutcherson admitted that the fame was hard to handle.
He said, “I got thrust into a place of notoriety that I never dreamed of, never wanted. It took privacy from me.” He later added, “I was like, ‘F--k that.’”
His words showed how overwhelming that sudden attention felt during the final film.

Why missing Spider-Man led to his biggest role?

Even though he lost out on Spider-Man, Josh Hutcherson does not hold regret today. The Hunger Games gave him steady work, global reach, and long-term recognition. His role as Peeta became one of his most well-known performances.
Now at 33, Josh Hutcherson has found peace with fame. He works at his own pace. He also remains open to returning to the world of Panem if given the chance.
He said, “I would love to be back on set with Francis, with Jen, with Liam, with Woody.” He also added, “It would not take any convincing at all. I’d be there in a heartbeat.”
Though Andrew Garfield went on to play Spider-Man, Josh Hutcherson’s career moved in a different but successful direction. His story reflects how one missed role can open the door to something just as large.
