June Lockhart may forever be remembered as television's favorite sci-fi mom, but off-screen, her love story with her second husband, John Lindsay, was the chapter that shaped the second half of her Hollywood golden years.
Shortly after her first marriage ended for reasons unknown, June Lockhart found love again and married architect John Lindsay on April 5, 1959. Together, they built a life while she continued to rise as an iconic TV matriarch in shows like Lost in Space.
However, after nearly a decade, the couple divorced in October 1970. They didn't have children together.
After her second marriage, June Lockhart chose independence and never remarried. She continued to appear in movies and TV shows for decades before her passing on Oct. 23, 2025, due to natural causes. She was 100.
She is survived by her two daughters, June Elizabeth and actress Anne Lockhart (from her first husband, John F. Maloney), along with four grandchildren.
June Lockhart remembered: A glimpse into the iconic actress's life and career
June Lockhart was born in Manhattan, New York, on June 25, 1925. She was the daughter of actors Gene Lockhart and Kathleen Lockhart.
At only 8 years old, she began performing at the Metropolitan Opera production, and debuted at 13 with A Christmas Carol in 1938. In 2014, she reminisced about her earlier years through her talk with the Ames Tribune.
“I thought my parents were wonderful as the Cratchits, and it was just great fun to see how a film was made. I loved the Victorian costumes. We used to perform it every Christmas at home for our dinner guests. So I had already appeared in it, with my parents, in our living room for many years prior to doing it for MGM.”
In 1947, she won the coveted Tony Award and Theatre World Award for her Broadway debut in For Love of Money.
She made her name known through her role as Ruth Martin in Lassie, a family American TV series that follows the adventures of a female Rough Collie dog named Lassie and her pals, both human and animal. The show ran for 17 seasons.
The actress also starred as biochemist Maureen Robinson in the American sci-fi series Lost in Space, which ran for three seasons with 83 episodes in total. She also appeared as the Principal in the 1998 movie adaptation, alongside William Hurt, Mimi Rogers, and Heather Graham.
June Lockhart also dabbled in sitcoms as she headlined the CBS show Petticoat Junction, taking on the role as Dr. Janet Craig, a doctor who works at the Shady Rest and a mother figure to the younger female characters.
She also made a notable appearance on the American medical drama General Hospital for 14 episodes.
In 2021, which would be her final project, she appeared in the Lost in Space Netflix series as June, the Voice of Alpha Control.
June Lockhart passed away quietly at her home in Santa Monica, California, on Thursday, Oct. 23. She was with her daughter, June Elizabeth, and her granddaughter, Christianna, when she passed.
She was one of the last surviving actors from the Golden Age of Hollywood.
