When was Matthew McConaughey voted 'Sexiest Man Alive'? Actor picks his choice for People Magazine's 2025 edition

It has been almost two decades since People magazine named Matthew McConaughey the "Sexiest Man Alive." While a new celebrity will be crowned with the title later this year, the Interstellar actor has nominated one of his former co-stars for the upcoming edition.

Recently, McConaughey was at MJ&M (Mack, Jack & McConaughey)—an annual joint fundraiser organized by him, country music icon Jack Ingram, and former college football coach Mack Brown. At the event, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days named Anthony Hopkins as a potential "2025 S*xiest Man Alive" contender during a chat with People Magazine. Matthew McConaughey said:

"Anthony Hopkins! I've been marketing for him for years. Have you ever met him in person? He's a s*xy guy! Those eyes."

Matthew McConaughey earned the famous title in November 2005, 20 years after People Magazine announced Mel Gibson as the first-ever Sexiest Man Alive on its February ‘85 cover. The Lincoln Lawyer actor succeeded Jude Law, who was named the hottest man in the previous year’s edition. Last year, People Magazine named the Jack Ryan actor John Krasinski the 2024 Sexiest Man Alive.

Matthew McConaughey still (jokingly) believes he is People’s Sexiest Man Alive

Since Mel Gibson in 1985, 36 celebrities have held the title of "Sexiest Man Alive" at least once. While stars like George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, and Richard Gere have earned the title twice, Matthew McConaughey has a different take on the honor.

The True Detective actor spoke to People Magazine last year about being told how he is no longer the Sexiest Man Alive. McConaughey jokingly defended his 2005 title and said:

"People tell me, 'You're no longer the Sexiest Man Alive, McConaughey,' for the last 19 years, every time someone else has been crowned. And I say, 'Well, I'm still alive. Come on!' [...] If you're named it and you're still alive, you're still Sexiest Man Alive. That was my joke going forward with everything."

McConaughey might have been joking about his title reign, but he has endorsed his Amistad co-star more than once.

Matthew McConaughey previously declared Anthony Hopkins as the “Sexiest Man Alive” in January

The Silence of the Lambs actor attended the Joy Awards in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in January. At the ceremony, Hopkins reunited with his Amistad co-star McConaughey and multiple other Hollywood A-listers. The Dallas Buyers Club actor even shared a picture with the two-time Academy Award winner and captioned it on Instagram:

Apart from Hopkins, McConaughey shared pictures with Morgan Freeman and Martin Lawrence. It was the Hannibal actor’s first appearance since he lost his LA home in the Pacific Palisades fire in January.
