Meet the Putmans was a TLC reality show that first aired in 2017. The series followed a large Michigan-based family living together under one roof. The show focused on their daily routines, shared responsibilities, and family rules.

The Putman family recently returned to public attention after a fatal car accident. Three family members died in the crash. Several others were seriously injured and hospitalized.

On December 9, the driver involved in the accident was sentenced to jail. The case brought renewed focus on the family and their former television series.

What was Meet the Putmans about?

Meet the Putmans was a series that was launched in 2017 on TLC. The series had a single season consisting of 6 episodes. It followed the life of Bill Putman and his wife Barb, their four children and their extended family.

The central idea of Meet the Putmans was that a large family consisting of 26 people resided in a single house. The episodes displayed the distribution of chores, the manner in which the family raised children and how it dealt with conflicts.

Following the failure of TLC to renew Meet the Putmans show, the family carried on with their lives over the internet. In 2021, they started a YouTube series named Growing up Putman. This show provided an update on the life of the family and ran until January 2025.

What happened to the Putman Family and what was the court ruling?

On September 27, Isabelle Putman shared tragic news on Instagram. She confirmed that her grandparents Bill and Barb Putman and her aunt Megan had died in a car accident.

In her post, Isabelle wrote, “We ask for your continued prayers for Uncle Blake, Lulu, Alena, Noah and Gia as they recover.”

Several family members were injured and required hospital care.

According to court records obtained by PEOPLE, the driver involved was 55-year-old Pavel B. Shchukin. He pleaded no contest to three counts of a moving violation causing death. These charges were misdemeanors under Michigan law.

On December 9, Shchukin was sentenced to one year in jail. He was also ordered to pay $1,425 in fines. Before the sentencing, the family shared a public statement.

The statement said, “We’ve lost three guiding Godly people in our lives who we looked to for wisdom every day.”

It also explained that multiple children were hospitalized at the same time.

The family shared that Gia had undergone several surgeries.

They wrote, “Yesterday, Gia went through her 10th major surgery in the last 75 days.”

The family also spoke about facing the driver in court for the first time.

They added, “Today is both the plea and sentencing of the man who caused the accident.”

The statement ended by thanking medical staff and asking for continued prayers.
