When did Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder date? Vampire Dairies alum makes rare comment about ex

As per a recent article by US Weekly, Vampire Diaries fame Nina Dobrev recently made a rare comment about her ex-boyfriend and co-star Ian Somerhalder.

Dobrev spilled the tea in the newly released book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of Vampire Diaries. The actress recalled her chemistry reading with actor Rob Meyes during her audition days, with the entire cast not knowing that the two were dating. The book is written by Samantha Highfill, the editor of Entertainment Weekly. It was published on September 09.

“There was a bunch of drama around that [audition] because I was dating Rob Mayes at the time, but they didn’t know that. We were trying to keep it really secret because we were afraid that if they found out, they wouldn’t cast one or both of us.” Dobrev wrote in the book.

Nina Dobrev was selected for the role of Elena Gilbert, but Rob Mayes was not selected to play the character of Damon. The role instead went to Ian Somerhalder, whom she started dating later.

“It got awkward because I did get cast but he didn’t, and then we subsequently broke up. Then, I ended up eventually, years later, dating the actual Damon.” Read the book

Vampire Diaries creator Julie Plec recalled that Dobrev and Somerhalder were getting close behind the cameras. The crew found it to be sweet and charming.

"Nina had a boyfriend on the pilot. Ian had a girlfriend. Somewhere during season 1 they were both single and we were all like, ‘Oh dear.’” The creator of Vampire Diaries said as per the book.

“You were getting this energy of how much people cared and how passionate they were, but when they were mixing up real life with the fake life is when you’re like, ‘Be careful with yourselves.’” Plec continued

In 2010, Dobrev and Somerhalder began dating. Before ending their relationship in 2013, they had been together for three years. The ex-couple continued to portray love interests on the show even after their real-life breakup.

Even after their real-life romance ended, Nina Dobrev and Somerhalder have talked about staying friends.

“It wasn’t very dramatic at the time because they were both working very hard to be respectful with each other and considerate with each other, and I think there was a lot of love there,” Plec recalled the time after Dobrev and Somerhalder split.

After meeting on the sets of the hit show Vampire Diaries, Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder began dating in 2010 after separating from their respective partners. The two dated for three years and broke up in 2013.

During the course of their relationship, the couple kept a low profile and offered an insight once or twice. Even after their split, Nina Dobrev and Somerhalder have managed to stay friends with each other. Dobrev and Somerhalder also joked about their breakup when they received the People's Choice Award for 'Best Chemistry.'

"This is crazy. Can you believe this is almost five years in the making?" Somerhalder looked at Nina Dobrev.

"We started dating on the show," Dobrev said .

"We started dating in real life," Somerhalder continued.

"And then we broke up in real life," finished Nina Dobrev.

"And yet our characters are still dating on the show," added Somerhalder.

"It's a good thing it's not awkward," Dobrev laughed and added "Well, it's a good thing we have chemistry," as Somerhalder kissed on her cheek.
