Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch recently appeared in A Deadly American Marriage. The Netflix documentary explores the gruesome details around the killing of the siblings’ father, Jason, at the hands of their stepmother, Molly Martens, and step-grandfather, Tom Martens, who claimed to have acted in self-defense. Jack and Sarah gave interviews about how the incident impacted their lives.
After the death of Jason Corbett, his sister, Tracey, and brother-in-law, David Lynch, got custody of his children. For the past decade, the brother-sister duo has continued to live under the guardianship of their aunt and her husband. Before tying the knot with Molly Martens, Jason was married to Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch’s mother, Margaret “Mags” Fitzpatrick.
As mentioned in A Deadly American Marriage, the siblings’ mother passed away in November 2006. The following year, on April 11 (per the records), Jason declared his sister and brother-in-law guardians of his children, who were toddlers then. A highlighted record from his will, with the declaration shown in the Netflix documentary, read,
“I appoint the said David Lynch and his wife Tracey Lynch (my sister) to be guardians of my infant children.”
The document was drafted and signed by Jason Corbett before he met and married Molly Martens. After he died, despite his second wife’s claims and legal filing, the local judge awarded Tracey Lynch custody of her niece and nephew, and they moved back to Ireland.
Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch renounced their initial statements months later
Margaret and Jason Corbett’s children returned to Ireland with their aunt after their father was killed at their North Carolina home. According to CBS’ 48 Hours, Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch underwent “intensive therapy” before adjusting well. At the same time, Molly Martens contacted the children through social media.
Nine months later, the kids also renounced the statements they had given a day after their father’s demise. Per 48 Hours, Jack told a social worker that his initial claims were false and added,
“We were going to get interviewed. … She was saying a lot of stories, making up stories about my dad saying that he was abusive. And she started saying, ‘if you don't lie, I'll never ever see you again.’”
A statement from Jack was also read out in the court in the 2017 trial, which read (via Irish Independent),
“My dad was always there for me. I don't have that anymore. I will never be able to give him a hug or a card on Father’s Day. He won't see me grow up.”
Jason’s kids maintained the same stance during their interviews in A Deadly American Marriage while talking fondly about their father. In the past decade, both kids have stayed in Ireland. Sarah Corbett Lynch authored books titled “A Time for Truth: My Father Jason and My Search for Justice and Healing” and “Noodle Loses Dad.”
Her older brother, Jason, is a singer-songwriter, per his X account. In March, Sarah Corbett Lynch reposted a Dancing in the Sky cover her brother sang in the memory of their father, a few years back. The children also spoke during the resentencing hearing. Jack was quoted as saying (via Irish Independent),
“I have been made to relive it all. Hearing my words being used to try to mitigate the crime committed. My words were weaponised to help Molly and Tom Martens get away with killing my dad.”
Sarah Corbett Lynch said,
“Molly and Tom Martens have used me — and words I was forced to say as an 8-year-old child — to escape the just consequences of beating my dad to death. [...] I can stand here today and say I do not love Molly and she is not my mother.”
Molly and her father, Thomas, were initially convicted of second-degree murder of Jason Corbett in 2017, but their conviction was overturned in 2021 after an appeal. In 2023, the pair accepted a plea deal, which reduced their charges to voluntary murder and resulted in a lesser sentence.
