Audrey Fualaau is the first daughter of Mary Kay and Vili. Mary Kay, who was Vili’s teacher when he was in school, began a s*xual relationship with the almost 13-year-old when he was a sixth-grader in 1996, as per People Magazine.
While Mary Kay was found guilty of second-degree r*pe of a child, she gave birth to Audrey while awaiting her sentence, noted Today.
At the time, a large part of Mary Kay’s sentence was suspended, and she was ordered to get treatment for s*x offenders and have no contact with Vili. However, according to People Magazine, Mary Kay, while out on parole, was discovered in her car with Vili and was arrested for violating the conditions of her parole. The pair’s second daughter, Georgia, was also born while Mary Kay was in prison.
Georgia and Audrey Fualaau on their parent’s relationship
In 2018, Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau’s daughters, Georgia and Audrey Fualaau, appeared alongside their parents, on the Australian Sunday Night show.
Mary Kay and Vili got married in 2005 when the former was released from prison after serving a seven-year sentence, according to People Magazine. The publication noted that the couple had petitioned the court to lift their no-contact order.
According to Today, Audrey Fualaau compared her own perception of her parents’ relationship to the public’s during her Sunday Night show appearance and said,
"I think I understand about it, just like how it was surprising to people. It’s been feeling different because it's not really been brought to our attention, just because we grew up with it, so we're adapted to it.”
Audrey, who was 21 at the time, also shared what it is like to have a young father. According to Today, she said,
“He definitely feels like a young dad now that I'm at that adult age to where I can go to a bar. He’s like a 'friend dad.’”
In 2023, the Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore starrer May December was released. Although not an adaptation of the Fualaau story, the film, directed by Todd Haynes, dealt with many concerns that arose out of the relationship between Mary Kary and Vili.
