Camilla Luddington, known for her role in Grey’s Anatomy, has revealed that she has Hashimoto's disease.
On the August 6 episode of the Call It What It Is podcast, which she co-hosts with former Grey’s Anatomy actress Jessica Capshaw, she shared how the diagnosis came about.
She said she used to joke about being slower than others, always feeling tired, loving naps, and wanting to stay in bed. She never thought there might be a medical reason behind it. She hadn’t done her usual blood test in a while, so during her break from work, Camilla Luddington decided to finally get it done.
When the results came back, her doctor said everything looked fine except for one small thing. That’s when she heard the words “autoimmune disease,” which surprised her. She was then told she had Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, which wasn't rare.
Camilla Luddington is married to actor Matthew Alan. The couple got married in 2019, two years after they had their daughter, Hayden, in 2017. Their son, Lucas, was born in 2020.
Speaking about her schedule on the medical drama show and spending time with her kids, during a conversation with NewBeauty in 2023, she said:
“We have two or three months off in between seasons, so that’s really special with my kids. But it’s tricky. You learn as you go, and it’s different every year and every age because they change so much and they need different things. So I’m still learning what that balance looks like.”
What Camilla Luddington has said about her kids and husband over the years
Before Camilla Luddington and Matthew Alan got married, she told People Magazine that their relationship was more like that of a husband and wife because they had already become parents. However, she added:
“But there’s something romantic to us about solidifying that family unit by having the ceremony and actually having Hayden present.”
The actress gave birth to her son, Lucas, during the COVID-19 pandemic. She told Kelly Clarkson in 2021 that giving birth during the pandemic was an intense experience. She felt that other people who had babies during that time shared a special connection with her because they went through the same tough situation.
Speaking about how Hayden reacted to becoming an elder sister, she told People Magazine:
“We were relieved, as you just never know with a toddler how they may react to things. The day we brought him home will always be one of my favorite memories ever.”
Camilla Luddington and Matthew Alan first met almost two decades ago, in 2008. In the 14th season of Grey’s Anatomy, there was a scene in which Luddington’s character gets married to Alex Karev.
At the time, she told Entertainment Tonight that it felt strange when she was leaving that morning, and Alan jokingly wished her luck for her marriage on the show. Even though it was odd, Camilla Luddington explained that he was also an actor, so he understood the situation. In 2018, she told Today that they worked as waiters in a restaurant before venturing into the acting industry.
