Diane Von Fürstenberg, who is currently married to Barry Diller, who recently came out as gay, has two children: daughter Tatiana Von Fürstenberg and son Alexander Von Fürstenberg, from her first marriage. Her husband, Barry Diller, came out as gay in his new memoir, Who Knew, where he details his reasons for coming out late in his life and his marriage to the fashion designer.
Alexander and Tatiana Von Fürstenberg have, from a young age, enjoyed a life of privilege and glamour, having been born to a father who belonged to the Italian nobility and a mother whose briliant design of the wrap dress single handedly made tidal waves in the fashion industry in the 80s and remains popular even today.
More about Alexander and Tatiana Von Furstenberg
Tatiana Von Fürstenberg was born on February 16, 1971, to Prince Egon Von Fürstenberg and Diane Von Fürstenberg. From her father's side, she is connected to the House of Fürstenberg, an influential noble family that originated in Germany.
According to The New York Times, when she was just four years old, her mother, Diane, launched a new perfume under her name. Tatiana Von Fürstenberg received her education at the prestigious English boarding school Cranborne Chase School and later attended Brown University.
Tatiana Von Fürstenberg was earlier the lead singer of the band Playdate, which was made up of her friends from university. She has worked in the entertainment industry in various capacities as a producer and actor, but is currently focused on her work as a curator. Some of her acting credits include Bram Stoker's Dracula and Light Sleep.
She wrote and co-directed the 2009 movie Tanner Hall, and in a 2011 interview with The New York Times, she spoke about where she finds the strength to undertake different ventures. She said:
"I don’t know if that’s genetic or something I learned at home,” adding that she has a brilliant “capacity for executive decision making.”
In a 2014 interview with The New York Times, Fürstenberg, who has described her sexuality as fluid, talked about how the theme of her exhibition provides support for inmates who are members of the LGBTQ community. She said:
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do after ‘Tanner Hall,’ so I went to a gestalt storytelling workshop, and we talked how important it is to cultivate a culture of compassion. Stories connect people and can ignite humanity.”
She is also the author of My Sunburned Summer, a 2009 semi-autobiographical graphic novel based on a young girl who is out on a vacation with her family, but suddenly secrets begin to unravel. She currently enjoys a quiet life by the sea in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
According to The Daily Beast, Tatiana Von Fürstenberg, who was diagnosed with Myotonia Congenita, a genetic condition at the age of twenty-one, said in an interview about how the condition affects her. She said:
“I felt like an outsider. As a disabled woman, I feel marginalized. I don't have fear of mortality. When you live with chronic illness you imagine a release. I want to be alive, but I don't want to be in pain. The pain is really intense."
She further added,
"I overcompensated a lot as a kid. I really struggled to keep up. It was thought I was acting up, different, eccentric, my teachers thought I was rebellious. I really wasn’t. I was late getting to class because of my condition."
In an interview with Provincetown Magazine, Tatiana Von Fürstenberg said that it was the quietness and simplicity of the place that drew her to live there, revealing that she now lives in a house previously owned by novelist Norman Mailer. She said:
“It’s refreshing to me to be in a place where people can be themselves. That is so liberated. There’s so much freedom. And such a quality of expression. Creativity and nature. To find the level of creativity here and be able to be around nature as well is hard to find. I’m so fortunate and grateful as I don’t want a city life. This is how I want to live.”
Tatiana Von Furstenberg married Russell Steinberg in 2002. The couple had previously welcomed their first and only child, Antonia Steinberg, in 2000.
Her brother, Alexander Von Fürstenberg, was born on January 25, 1970. Like his sister, Tatiana, Alexander also attended Brown University and graduated in 1993. According to the official IAC website, Alexander currently serves as the Chief Investment Officer at Ranger Global Advisor, a company he founded in 2011. They have two children, Talita Natasha Von Fürstenberg, born in 1997, and Tassilo Egon Maximillian, born in 2001. He later married fashion designer Alison Parker Kay in 2020, with whom he shares two sons.
Tatiana Von Fürstenberg and her brother, Alexander Von Fürstenberg, maintain a close relationship with their mother and were present at the impromptu wedding of Diane Von Fürstenberg with her current husband, Barry Diller, whom she married in 2001.
