Belgian fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg’s husband, Barry Diller, has come out as gay, according to a report in Page Six.

This comes after decades of speculation about his sexuality and their relationship. He has opened up about his identity in his memoir, Who Knew, excerpts of which were published by New York Magazine on May 6, 2025. Per USA Today, Diller wrote in the memoir, to be published on May 20:

"Yes, I also liked guys, but that was not a conflict with my love for Diane. I can't explain it to myself or to the world. It simply happened to both of us without motive or manipulation. In some cosmic way we were destined for each other"

Diller, 83, has been married to Fürstenberg, 78, since 2001. He is known for his work as the Chairman and Senior Executive of IAC from 1995 to late 2010, and the Expedia Group.

According to the Expedia Group website, from October 1984 to April 1992, Diller served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox, Inc. and was responsible for the creation of Fox Broadcasting Company and Fox’s motion picture operations. He also worked at ABC and Paramount before founding IAC in 1995.

Here are more details on his life and career.

All we need to know about Barry Diller

Barry Diller started his career in the entertainment industry in the 1960s when he worked for the William Morris Agency. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the head of the agency’s television department.

He then moved to ABC, where he developed shows like The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game, as per a report in Faster Capital. Diller, known as a remarkable figure in the entertainment and technology industries, has also emerged as an advocate for net neutrality.

He met his wife, Diane von Fürstenberg, in the mid-1970s at a dinner party after he was named as the chairman and CEO of Paramount. When they reconnected at a dinner party hosted by mutual friend Sue Mengers, romance blossomed between the couple.

“There was no effort, no reasoning, no what's-going-on-here, no ambition, no anything. Other than sheer excitement, I thought, 'Well, this is a surprise!' I certainly didn't feel, 'Oh my God, what does this mean?' I was simply existing in the moment, a rare place for me.” Diller reflected in his New York Magazine essay.

“I have never questioned my sexuality’s basic authority over my life (I was only afraid of the reaction of others),” he recalled. “When my romance with Diane began, I never questioned that its biological imperative was as strong in its heterosexuality as its opposite had been. When it happened, my initial response was, 'Who knew?’” Diller wrote in his memoir.

The couple hit a rough patch in the 1980s when Diller came to know of his wife’s alleged affair with Richard Gere during production of the Paramount Pictures film, American Gigolo. However, the two reconciled after 10 years of separation. The two have remained married for 24 years since 2001.

They share no children. However, his wife has two children from her previous marriage to Prince Egon von Furstenberg — Alexander von Furstenberg, 55, and Tatiana von Furstenberg, 54, according to a report in Page Six.

The couple was seen attending Met Gala 2024, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
