Iga Świątek's assertive display at the Wimbledon singles final, in which she came up trumps 6-0, 6-0, has swept up the internet. Her exceptional performance at the All England Club against Amanda Anisimova was one for the history books, as she became the first Polish sportsperson to clinch the Wimbledon title while also emulating the result which was not seen in a Wimbledon final since 2011.
Iga Świątek won the match at a canter and was presented the trophy by the Princess of Wales. While basking in the adulation that she received from the crowd, Swiatek said the following about her achievement:
"Honestly, I didn't even dream (of this), because for me, it was just, like, way too far, you know? I feel like I'm already an experienced player after winning the Slams before, but I never really expected this one.I want to thank my team -- they believed in me more than I did"
Iga Świątek - a brief history
Iga Świątek is a Polish player who was born on 31 May 2001 in Warsaw, Poland. She began her tennis career at an early age with the training of her father, who used to be an Olympic rower. Her early days were influenced by tussles with her sister Agata Świątek, who was forced to quit the game at an early age of 15 years due to an injury.
Iga Świątek's early experiences in the Mera-Warsaw Tennis Club and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior circuit helped shape her court game to a large extent, which is known for its powerful forehand with exceptional topspin. After winning everything there was on offer at the ITF, she progressed over to the big leagues in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour in 2019.
It took her a little while to get into her stride, but finally she started exhibiting the characteristics of the player she had been in the junior circuits. Świątek won the French Open 2020 by rolling over the competition as she won without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. It was just a preview of the image that she was about to create on the court.
Since going on a 37-match unbeaten streak in 2022, she has won several WTA 1000 titles as well. She was also the Bronze medalist of her country at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Before she won Wimbledon, she had already won four Grand Slams.
The success that Iga Świątek has had on the field has mirrored her financial success off the field, too. It has even resulted in giving her a boost in that she was ranked as the highest-paid female athlete in 2023 (her earnings reached 23.9 million). To top off her on-court success, she has also entered into brand partnerships with companies like PZU, On, Tecnifibre, Rolex, and Xiaomi.
Świątek's performances on the court have often evoked comparisons with Serena Williams, who was also known for her dominant presence on the court. Iga has been a familiar name among tennis insiders for years now, but her sweeping performance at Wimbledon will truly go a long way towards announcing her arrival to the global audience.
