Former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, Alexandra Shapiro, is a well-known criminal defense lawyer in the United States. She has been in the news for handling major cases involving celebrities and business leaders. More recently, according to the court records reviewed by People Magazine, she is set to join the legal team of actor and director Justin Baldoni in his case against actress Blake Lively.
Shapiro’s name is linked to some of the most talked-about trials in recent years. In 2025, she defended music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal sex trafficking case. Previously, Alexandra Shapiro has also represented the FTX Founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.
As per People Magazine, Shapiro's notice of appearance was filed last week, formally stepping into another high-profile dispute involving Baldoni and Lively. The case is connected to sexual harassment and retaliation claims made by Lively against Baldoni, as well as his colleagues at Wayfarer Studios during the production of the film It Ends With Us.
Alexandra Shapiro’s legal career

Alexandra Shapiro is a co-founder of a New York litigation boutique, Shapiro Arato Bach LLP. The firm is known to represent clients dealing with appeals, civil litigation, and high-stakes criminal and regulatory matters.
Beginning her career with a clerkship at the Supreme Court under Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, she joined the Southern District of New York as an Assistant U.S. Attorney thereafter, also serving as the Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney. She co-founded Shapiro Arato Bach in 2009.
As per Shapiro Arato Bach's official website, in many crime and civil cases, especially high-profile white collar matters, Alexander Shapiro has also won appellate reversals. She has a history of being well-known in high-stakes criminal cases and appellate law, representing prominent celebrities, corporate CEOs, Wall Street professionals, as well as public and private companies.
She is also the author of the book titled Presumed Guilty, published in 2022, revolving around wrongful white collar prosecution.
Role in celebrity cases

In 2025, Alexandra Shapiro was defending Sean “Diddy” Combs in his federal trial. According to Grazia, Shapiro campaigned for Diddy's acquittal, filing several motions for the dismissal of the case.
As of recently, Shapiro is set to represent actor and director Justin Baldoni in a lawsuit against Lively. Baldoni denies Lively's allegations of sexual harassment and retaliation filed against him, as well as his colleagues, during the production of the 2024 film (People Magazine).
In a countersuit for $400 million, Baldoni accused Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, of defamation, which was dismissed by a New York court in June. The next court hearing is scheduled for October 2021, as per People Magazine.
The trial will take place in March 2026.
