Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently opened up about how he feels about his age.
DiCaprio revealed his thoughts during an exclusive interview with Paul Thomas Anderson for Esquire. The actor has worked with Anderson in the movie One Battle After Another.
Leonardo DiCaprio also talked about not watching his own films and not feeling like he is 50 years old. He further discussed that he now has no time to waste, and his recent birthday in November 2024 taught him how to change perspective.
“I look at my mother, for example, and she just says exactly what she thinks and wastes no time. She spends no time trying to fake it.” Leonardo Di Caprio said.
For those unaware, Caprio's mother, Irmelin Indenbirken, has worked as a legal secretary.
The Titanic actor was asked by Anderson to "answer as quickly," if you "didn't know how old you are, how old are you right now?" Leonardo DiCaprio replied that he is 32 years old.
In the interview, which was released on Wednesday, August 13, Anderson, 55, said to DiCaprio, "Esquire wants me to ask you this question." Last year was your 50th birthday. Does now seem like a good moment to reflect?
To this, Leonardo DiCaprio replied that emotionally, he turned 35 last year, thus emphasizing that he doesn't feel like he is 50.
“Your age is 50, but your emotional maturity is 32.” Anderson joked amicably and further asked "How does that feel?"
Caprio also reflected on his past and shared a professional regret that he has with Anderson.
"I'll say it even though you’re here: My biggest regret is not doing Boogie Nights. It was a profound movie of my generation. I can’t imagine anyone but Mark [Wahlberg] in it. When I finally got to see that movie, I just thought it was a masterpiece. It’s ironic that you’re the person asking that question, but it’s true.” Caprio confessed.
About Leonardo DiCaprio's mother
Leonardo DiCaprio's mother, Irmelin Indenbirken, was born in Germany in an air raid shelter during the time of World War II.
According to a 2004 Vanity Fair story, Irmelin had relocated to New York City by the 1960s, where she first met George DiCaprio. After attending City College, she moved to Los Angeles with George and started working as a legal secretary.
After a year, Leonardo's parents moved to California. George and Irmelin split up a year after Leonardo was born, and got divorced in the late 1990s. Leonardo told Vanity Fair that he has happy memories of his early years despite his parents' divorce.
After five nominations, Irmelin sat in the first row next to Leonardo at the 2016 Oscars and saw him win the much-anticipated Best Actor prize. In his victory speech, the actor specifically thanked his parents, explaining that "none of this would be possible without you."
She was spotted later that night at the Vanity Fair Oscars afterparty, smiling broadly and holding Leonardo's trophy with pride as her son watched with affection. George later joined the two for a celebration supper at West Hollywood's Ago Restaurant.
